It's a Kind of Magic....

Hello everyone...

As we begin the new week, it's time for a brand new Simon Says Stamp Monday challenge and this week,  we are challenging you to MAKE YOUR OWN BACKGROUND!

So, with so many different ways of doing this, and whether you use inks, sprays, pastes or paints, you will be spoilt for choice and we can't wait to see how you will interpret this fun challenge theme.

For my background I chose to use Distress Spray Stains and Oxide Sprays, together with stamps and I just had so much fun building up those layers to create interest and texture ready for the focal point of those beautiful butterflies.

So, let's get started because it's time to share how I created my background...

For this make, I used a combination of Tim Holtz products and chose an idea-ology clipboard, a Size 8 Etcetera Tag and a size 8 Mixed Media Heavystock tag as my substrates.

BACKGROUNDS

The background on the tag and the clipboard are both created using the same colours of sprays, oxide sprays and inks. I chose the following:

DISTRESS SPRAY STAINS: Iced Spruce, Old Paper, Speckled Egg. Gathered Twigs

OXIDE SPRAYS: Old Paper

DISTRESS INKS: Uncharted Mariner, Scorched Timber

I began by cutting a panel of Mixed Media Heavystock card, and also used a size 8 Mixed Media Heavystock tag. I misted each of these surfaces with water and then started to apply my sprays, using the Distress Spray Stains first and only applying a light touch of Gathered Twigs, and then some light flicks of Old Paper Oxide. I applied a little more water to blend the colours and then allowed these to dry. You can also use a heat tool to dry the inks.

Once my surfaces were dry, I inked around the edges with Scorched Timber Distress Ink.

To add some more interest to my background, I used Black Soot Archival Ink to ink up the script stamp from the Stampers Anonymous Tiny Toadstools stamp set and added the script randomly onto my card panel and tag.

Set the panel to one side and taking the tag, I added some more stamping down the right hand side. I used one of the stamps from the SA Faded Type stamp set and inked this with clear ink, before applying gold embossing powder over the top. Tap away the excess and then heat emboss until molten.

Finally, I used Tim's Splatter Brush to add some white paint speckles and machine stitched a border around each piece to complete the backgrounds.

CLIPBOARD

We're now ready to start constructing this piece and to begin with I worked on the clipboard and after unscrewing the clip, I attached the inked card panel to the board using Matte Collage Medium.

I then stamped the Factory No.1896 down the left hand side of the board. This stamp is from the Eccentric stamp set.

Taking the clip, I wanted to this to have a rusty, crusty appearance which is so easy to achieve and you can see a tutorial on how I do this by clicking HERE.

To alter this clip, I used exactly the same process as I used in my earlier post, but I omitted the Salvaged Patina Paint on this particular piece.

Once the clip was ready, I reattached it to my board and then attached the Mini Plaquette, No.79 to the centre of the clip.

TAG

Moving onto the tag, and to begin with I stamped the butterflies from the Papillon stamp set down the left hand side of the tag. This stamp set now has co-ordinating dies from Simon Says Stamp, so no more fussy cutting when we move onto the next step.

BUTTERFLIES

To create the butterflies, I re-stamped the image onto watercolour card using the brand new Mini Oxide Ink Pads and my stamp platform.

I inked the stamps directly with various colours from this release, including Crackling Campfire, Barn Door, Peacock Feathers, Bundled Sage, Scorched Timber, and Gathered Twigs. I personally find it easier to do one butterfly at time. I then lightly misted water over the inked stamps before stamping them onto the card.

If you feel you need more colour, then re-position your card on the platform and just go in with the ink pad.

Once I was happy with my butterflies, I used the Simon Says Stamp co-ordinating die set to die cut each one from the card.

I inked the edges of the die cuts with Frayed Burlap Distress Ink and then attached them to the tag, lifting the wings and not attaching these. I placed each image over the top of the previously stamped image on my tag, and this ensures I get the correct placement and also you can see the text from the stamp.

Before I attached my tag to the Etcetera Tag, I stitched the bodies of the butterflies to the tag.

With my tag complete, I attached it to the clipboard using Matte Collage Medium.

To complete the tag, I added a Curator Ephemera piece in the top right hand corner.

I also added a Quote Chip, 'A Little Magic Can Take You A Long Way", and once again, I placed a Cello Sticker tape over the chip.

Finally I added an Adornment Star and two hardware heads, all of which I painted with gold acrylic paint.

DETAILS

It's now time for all those tiny finishing details and I began by adding a Numbers Snippet to the right hand side of the clipboard, tucking it underneath the tag, and once again, I added a Cello Sticker Tape.

Finally, I attached a Swivel Clasp to the clip and from the chain, I hung an idea-ology Thought Token which I painted with Candied Apple Distress Paint. Once dry, I then scribbled Phantom Mist Distress Crayon over the token and wiped away the excess to reveal the wording.

So, that's my make complete and I hope you've loved the piece I've created and feel inspired by the techniques.

Heartbeat...

Hello everyone...

Hope you all had a lovely weekend and as a new week begins, it's time for a brand new Simon Says Stamp Monday Challenge and this week our theme is called Have A Heart and we hope you'll join us and ❤️ this fun challenge theme!

For my make, I used the 3D heart from Tim's Rosette Vault die set by Sizzix and made this the focal point of my tag ~ a heart wrapped in a wire cage and I combined this with an older die set, Heartbeat and the Damask Embossing Folder to bring this piece to life.

So let's get started and here's how I created this piece that needs to be handled with care...

I used a Size 8 Etcetera Tag for this make.

BACKGROUND

For this background, I chose to use the Damask Embossing Folder and I cut a piece of Mixed Media Heavystock Card to fit inside the folder.

I then misted the card with water before placing it inside the folder and running it through my die cutting machine a couple of times.

After removing the embossed card, I then added the colour using a combination of the following Distress Sprays and Oxide Sprays:

DISTRESS SPRAY STAINS: Speckled Egg, Black Soot, Rustic Wilderness, Crackling Campfire

OXIDE SPRAYS: Speckled Egg, Tumbled Glass, Rustic Wilderness

Once again, I misted the surface of the card with water before placing it in my splatter box and adding the colour, spritzing one colour at a time, adding water between each layer to blend the sprays and always drying each layer before continuing onto the next.

Once I was happy, I heat dried the card.

To accentuate the embossing, I applied Foundry Wax. Firstly, I used my fingertip to apply a light touch of the Gilded Wax over the raised areas and then heat set the wax before adding a second layer of Sterling but this time, adding less colour and only allowing the wax to hit some of the raised areas. This will create a beautiful two toned effect.

Heat set the wax and then cut the embossed panel down so that it fits the front of a Size 8 Etcetera Tag. Ink the edges with Walnut Stain Distress Ink and machine stitch a border around the outside.

I then mounted the tag onto a piece of burlap, slightly larger in size than the tag itself so that it shows a border around the outside.

Attach the layered tag onto the front of the size 8 etcetera tag using Matte Collage Medium.

MOSAIC TILE LAYERS

For the layers that are in the centre of the tag, I began by using the same sprays and oxide sprays to colour some more of the Mixed Media Heavystock card.

I then took a rectangular Mosaic Etcetera Tile and covered it with a piece of the inked cardstock. I sanded the edges of the tile before inking with Walnut Stain Distress Ink and then applied some of the Gilded Foundry Wax along each side of the tile. Heat set the wax.

Along the bottom of the panel, I stamped the star border from The Inspector stamp set and embossed it with gold embossing powder before adding a narrow strip, (an offcuts from the embossed panel), and placing this just above the star border.

With the tile complete, I added the rusty wire.

I cut two strips of the wire and hot glued it into position on the back of the tile, leaving the ends free so I can wrap them around the heart.

Add foam pads to the back of the tile and mount it onto a piece of silver metallic kraft cardstock, before then mounting these layers onto a further piece of the inked card which I stitched a border around the outside edge.

I attached the panel onto the centre of the tag using more foam pads and added a small remnant rub number, "No. 861" in the top right hand corner.

To complete the tile I hammered two nail tacks into the top left and right hand corners, bending them with a pair of pliers.

I then altered the metal with a combination of Distress Paints ~ Black Soot, Crackling Campfire and Antiqued Bronze, before adding a watered down solution of the Black Soot and Crackling Campfire paints to create the rusty finish in the corners and along the edge of the tile itself.

Finally, I added a Tiny Clip to the top of the tile.

HEART and HEARTBEAT

Now for the focal point ~ creating the heart.

For this I spritzed a piece of Mixed Media Heavystock Card with Lumberjack Plaid, Barn Door and a hint of Fired Brick Distress Spray Stains.

After heat drying the card, I added my pattern using the Tim Holtz Tiny Prints Background Stamp from Stampers Anonymous. I inked the stamp with Versamark clear embossing ink, stamped the image onto the panel and then sprinkled gold embossing powder over the top. Tap away the excess and heat emboss until the powder becomes molten.

Taking the patterned card panel, I cut out my heart using the die from the Rosettes Vault set, inked the edges with Walnut Stain Distress Ink and then folded along the scorelines to assemble the 3D heart, attaching the flaps with a strong adhesive tape.

As you can see from the photo below, I placed the heart in the centre of the heartbeat, and this is a die cut from the Heartbeat Die Set and next up, I'll share how I created the gold enamelled effect.

I used once of the heartbeat dies in the set, (the die with the heart in the centre) and cut this four times before layering each die cut over the top of one another to make a substantial piece.

I then pounced the Embossing Dabber over the surface of the layered die cut before sprinkling with gold embossing powder and heat embossing it.

I repeated this enamelling technique, a couple more times before I attached the heartbeat across theorised tile section, placing the 3D heart over the top and leaving the ends of the heartbeat to overhang the tile itself.

Taking the four ends of the wire which I had already attached to the back of the tile, I coiled these and wrapped them around the heart.

LOVE SENTIMENT

The love sentiment that is sitting beneath the heart is also from the Heartbeat die set and just as I did to create the heartbeat line, I cut the wording four times and then layered them over one another, cutting away the ends of this to leave me with the LOVE word only.

I then enamelled the sentiment using the same technique as before and attached it to my tile.

We're nearly there and all that's left is the finishing details...

HANDLE WITH CARE

I stamped the Handle With Care label onto a piece of card using the stamp from the SA/Tim Holtz Eccentric stamp set. I used a combination of Barn Door and Black Soot Archival Inks.

After cutting around the edge of the label, I attached it to my tag with foam pads.

Finally, I added two large fasteners either side of the label ~ these fasteners do have legs on the back which I cut away before attaching them directly onto my tag and altering the metal with the same Distress Paint colours as I used on the nail tacks.

To complete the tag, I added a Mini Book Ring through the hole, and hung the Hook Clasp from the ring, all of which are altered with the rusty Distress Paint combination used throughout.

So that completes my make for this week and I hope you love it.

But before I go, I wanted to share another small make ~ tiny keyring charm made from the 3D hearts that I stuck back to back, before placing a memo pin through the top and adding a hook clasp.

As always, if you make anything, or if you've been inspired by anything that you've seen here on my blog ~ then please, let me know by tagging me on social media or leaving a comment here and I will be right over to take a look!

Simon Says Stamp Smitten and Sweetheart Blog Hop ~ Day 2

Hello everyone and welcome to Day 2 of the Smitten and Sweetheart Blog Hop ~ day 1 of this hop can be found here!

I'm so excited to be joining this hop and you might have arrived here from my extremely talented friend, the amazing Alberto Gava but if not, and you want to catch up with everyone who is participating in this hop, then don't worry because you can head back to the beginning, HERE.

For my card set, I chose to combine products from the two releases and used the beautiful Flower Love Stamp Set with the Friendship Leafy Cluster stamps to create a couple of projects that celebrates friendship. You can check out all the fabulous new products in the Sweetheart release, HERE and the Smitten release, HERE.

So you've seen the cards, and it's time to share how I created them...

To begin with I made my background, which is one sheet of black heavystock card that I stamped the design onto, and then cut into three separate panels which I used on the two card projects.

BACKGROUND

With the panel of black heavystock card in front of me, I took the larger leafy clusters stamp from the stamp set and inked this with Versamark Clear Ink. I then stamped the pattern, one leaf at a time, onto the outside edges of the cardstock, leaving plenty of open space in the centre of the panel. After sprinkling with gold embossing powder, I then heat set the powder until molten and glossy.

Now to colour the leaves, and for this, I used a combination of Polychromos Pencils and Tim Holtz's Wicked Elixir Mica Spray Stain. I began by colouring inside the embossed areas with the various shades of green pencils, this helps to intensify the colour of the Mica Stain. Once I had coloured all the leaves, I then spritzed some of the stain onto my glass mat and used a waterbrush, or a paintbrush to apply a colour wash over the top to create the beautiful shimmer.

Allow for the mica stain to dry before cutting the background into three separate panels which are ready to cut and use on the cards.

2 panels measuring 8.5 x 11.5cm and a 3rd panel to measure 3 x 8.5cm.

After machine stitching a border around the outside of the panel, I matted each panel onto gold metallic kraft stash, leaving a border around the outside.

FLOWERS

I used the Flower Love Stamp set to create the selection of flowers that I used on each of the cards. The flowers are all stamped in clear embossing ink onto black card and then I coloured them in exactly the same way as I coloured the leaves, first a layer of polychromos pencils and then I painted the Mica Spray Stain over the top to create the shimmery, jewelled tones.

For the flowers I used the following colours of Mica Stain:

Yuletide, Juniper Berry, Snow Flurries and Flickering Candle

Once the colour was laid down, and I was happy with the tones and intensity, I actually fussy cut each bloom because I don't own the matching die set. But if you don't like cutting and would like the die set, that is available HERE.

With all the components ready, it's time to make the cards.

CARD No. 1

Kraft card blank measurement: 15.5 x 12cm

To create the first layers on the card, I cut a panel of black card, 15 x 11.5cm and attached this to the card blank.

Using one of the 8.5 x 11.5cm stamped background panel, ink up the 'I cherish our' and the 'friendship' stamps from the Friendship Leafy Cluster set with Versamark Clear Ink and stamp this onto the left hand side of the card panel, placing it in one of the open spaces.

Sprinkle gold embossing powder over the sentiment and heat emboss until molten.

Taking a splatter brush, lightly splatter gold paint over the surface, and set to one side to dry.

Using 8 of the stamped flowers, I arranged these onto the card panel, layering some of the stamps over the top of one another to create dimension and using foam pads to attach each of them.

I mounted the finished panel onto a piece of black cardstock, slightly larger than the artwork and with a machine stitched border before mounting these layers onto a final layer of gold metallic kraft stash.

I then mounted the panels onto the card blank using foam pads.

Finally, I added three of the Rainbow Splash Drops to complete this card.

CARD No.2

Kraft card blank measurement:18 x 11.5cm

For this card, I cut a black card panel slightly smaller in size than my card blank and then wrapped a piece of hand dyed Tim Holtz's Mummy Cloth Trimming around the card.

This strip of cloth is dyed using a combination of Shabby Shutters and Antique Linen Distress Spray Stains before heat drying until thoroughly dry. I then wrapped the trimming around the card, and tied it into a bow on the left hand side to secure it into position.

For this card, I used the remaining two stamped and coloured panels both of which are matted onto gold metallic kraft card.

As with the previous card, I stamped the sentiment, Friends Make The World Beautiful, onto the larger sized panel and lightly splattered gold paint across the surface before I mounted both panels onto a piece of black card, 16 x 9.5cm which once again had a machine stitched border around the outside.

Using foam pads, mount the layered card panels onto the front of the card blank and to complete the card, I used the remaining two stamped flowers, layering one over the top of the other with foam pads. This flower is attached it to the left hand side of my card.

Finally, I placed three of the droplets onto the sentiment panel and one larger sized droplet in the centre of the flower and that completes both of my card projects for this hope and i hope you love what i've created.
