More Than A Woman...

Happy Monday and for all those Star Wars fans out there ~ Happy Star Wars Day and May the 4th be with you!

So, as we begin a brand new week, it's time for the Simon Says Stamp Monday Challenge and this week, our theme is called Mother's Day/Feminine and we would love for you to join us and play along. The DT are also showcasing some of the amazing products from our very own Simon Says Stamp...

Now I'm not really a pink girl which is the first thing you might associate with Mother's Day and feminine projects but I do love all things blue...so, for this make, I chose to use soft pastel blues and combined this with yellow, which was perfect for my background that uses a SSS stencil in readiness for the layers of Tim Holtz goodness to be added.

So, let's get started and it's time to share all the details of how I made this week's project!

TAG

To begin with I used a Size 8 Mixed Media Heavystock tag and began by creating my background jusign the Friendly Blossoms Stencil. This stencil is a layering stencil and comes in three parts and for my background, and because I'm using a tag which is slightly smaller in size than the stencil design, I used parts of the stencil.

I began by laying one of the larger blossoms over the top right hand corner. I then inked through the stencil using Speckled Egg and Stormy Sky Oxide Inks.

After flipping the stencil, I repeated the design in the bottom left hand corner using the same inks.

I then added another of the blossoms, one of the smaller sizes to the bottom right hand corner.

I went on to stencil the leaves into the spaces between the blossoms using Bundled Sage and Rustic Wilderness Oxide Inks.

Finally, I added the centres of the blossoms using Wild Honey and Fossilised Amber Oxides and the veins to the leaves were stencilled in Peeled Paint.

With the background complete, I inked the edges of the tag with a combination of Old Paper, Frayed Burlap and Walnut Stain Distress Inks, starting with the lightest colour and blending towards the centre and then reducing the ink each time, and applying the darkest colour to the edges.

I flicked some Walnut Stain Distress Ink across the surface of the tag, heat dried the ink and then flicked some white acrylic paint to add a few splatters and then added some stamped text in Black Soot Archival ink, using the script stamp from Tiny Toadstools.

Across the bottom of the tag, I added a border strip, which I think is from the Halloween Wallpaper pack that I had in my stash but don't quote me on that one, lol!

I added a machine stitched border around the edge and a cello sticker to the bottom right corner before mounting my tag onto a piece of burlap cardstock from my stash.

PHOTO BOOTH

We're now ready to embellish the tag and tell the story...

I chose this Photo Booth image because I thought it worked so well with the background and after trimming the photo down, I then added some rips and tears before colour tinting the image with Distress Crayons.

I added the date from the Specimen Remnant Rub Pack and then machine stitched the photo onto a piece of felt that I cut with pinking shears before placing a small piece of a Cello Sticker to the photo.

I matted the layered image onto some kraft cardstock and then mounted this onto the left hand side of my tag using foam pads,

I attached a ticket ephemera stub to the right of the photo and added the Handle With Care label, a stamp from the Stampers Anonymous Eccentric Stamp Set by Tim. I stamped this using Fired Brick Archival Ink and then fussy cut around the border before adhering to my tag.

I finally added the little roll of fabric. This is a Stitched Scrap that I rolled around a skewer and then secured the ends at the back. I then attached this to my tag with a Mini Pin and clipped a Tiny Clip to the top right of the image.

Finally, I added a small Specimen Remnant Rub No.1411 to just beneath the photo.

FLORALS

The florals are all die cut using a combination of dies. The leaves are from Brushstrokes 2 and the flowers from the Vault Side Order Floristry Die.

Both are cut from card inked with the following Distress Inks:

Leaves: Peeled Paint, Bundled Sage and Rustic Wilderness

Flowers: Fossilised Amber, Wild Honey

With my pieces die cut, I then arranged them onto the tag, placing them on either side of the photograph and shaping the leaves and petals to add some dimension.

FINISHING DETAILS

We're nearly there and all that's left are those all important finishing details....

I added some gold die cut stars that I had on my desk, which were left over from a previous project. I placed 3 of these around the focal point and then added some gold gems in the centres.

Finally, I attached a Clippings Sticker, 'her mother's heart' to the tag, placing it beneath the foliage on the right hand side...

...and completed the tag with some ribbon that I dyed with Scattered Straw and Antique Linen Distress Spray Stain and then threaded through the hole at the top of the tag.

That's my tag complete and my project for this week finished....

Never Forget...

Hello friends....

This week's brand new Simon Says Stamp Challenge is called THINKING OF YOU and we would love for you to join us and play along with this fun theme!

As always, there are so many interpretations for this challenge and we can't wait to see what you create.

For my make, I chose to honour and remember all those who have fought so bravely for our countries and as tomorrow is Armistice Day, I thought there was no better time than to make this tag featuring a poppy wreath, made using Tim Holtz dies from Sizzix.

So, let's get started and here's how I created this tag!

For this project I used a Size 8 Mixed Media Heavystock Tag, and a Size 8 Etcetera Tag as my base.

BACKGROUND

To create the background, I used the Heavystock Tag and began by applying a coat of Black Opaque Paste through the Rosettes Mini Layering Stencil. I wanted quite a dark background for this piece to reflect the occasion, but used Mica Spray Stains to add a slight hint of shimmer and shine.

I allowed for the paste to dry thoroughly and then after misting the tag lightly with water, I applied my background colours:

DISTRESS SPRAY STAIN: Black Soot, Antique Linen

OXIDE SPRAY: Speckled Egg

MICA SPRAY STAIN: Crooked Broomstick, Unravelled, Iron Gate

Once I was happy with the colour, I dried the tag before adding some stamping across the bottom. For this I used the border stamp from The Inspector Stampers Anonymous set and stamped the border using clear embossing ink. I then sprinkled gold embossing powder over the top and heat embossed the powder until molten.

To complete the tag, I added some machine stitching around the edge before adhering the tag onto the Etcetera Tag, using Matte Collage Medium.

Finally, I used gold watercolour paint to add some splatters across the surface...

...and placed a Snippets Ephemera piece in the top right hand corner.

POPPY WREATH

To create the poppies and greenery for this wreath, I used a selection of the smaller floral and foliage dies from the Sizzix Brushstroke 2 Thinlits die set by Tim Holtz.

I began by using Distress Spray Stains to add colour to the Mixed Media Heavystock card...

POPPIES: Lumberjack Plaid, Crackling Campfire

LEAVES: Bundled Sage, Peeled Paint, Holly Branch Mica Spray

I then cut all my pieces ~ each poppy has two die cut layers and I also cut two layers of the stamens, from black card and inked the edges with Walnut Stain Distress Ink.

I layered the die cut pieces over the top of one another, offsetting the second layer and then shaped the petals. I made 8 flowers in total.

Cut the foliage pieces from the inky green card.

I then used circle dies to form my base. You will need approx 8cm and 6.5cm dies to form the frame for your poppy wreath.

I then built up my poppies and greenery around the circular frame, covering the circle so that it doesn't show.

With my wreath complete, I added gold Metallic Droplets into the centres of each poppy.

PLAQUE

To create the plaque that sits across the wreath, I cut a piece of gold metallic Kraft card, 8 x 2.5cm and then applied some Black Soot and Crackling Campfire Distress Paint over the surface. Wipe away any excess paint, as you don't want this to become too dark, you just want it to look weathered.

I then die cut each of my letters to spell the word "REMEMBER". I cut these four times to create and then layered them over the top of one another to create dimensional letters. I attached the letters to my strip and then dry brushed some Antiqued Bronze Distress Paint over the top.

Once dry, I then attached the plaque across the centre of the wreath, using foam pads to secure it into position.

Finally, I added two Tiny Clips to each side of the plaque.

FINISHING DETAILS

I finished this tag by adding 3 Hardware Heads across the bottom of the tag, all of which I painted with the same paints as I used on the plaque.

I then added some rope from my stash.

So, that's my tag complete, and I hope you love the details and techniques I've used to make it.

It's A Beautiful Day...

Hello friends...

Hope you had a wonderful weekend and fingers crossed the sun has finally shone where you are! Here in London, it's been lovely and hot and spring, maybe even summer has finally made an appearance as the trees are in full blossom and the leaves are adorning the trees, at last!!

So, with this in mind and spring in the air, this week over on the Simon Says Stamp Monday Challenge blog, our challenge theme is called Flower Power and we can't wait to see your floral projects and hope you'll join us for this fun challenge.

For my project, I thought it would be fun to create a couple of cards ~ we all need cards at some point and I thought this was the ideal time to make two very special ones for family members.
I was actually inspired by an embroidered tablecloth that my Grandma created as a young girl. The cloth was covered with blue flowers, periwinkles and forget-me-nots and I always adored it and would look at it for ages, touching the flowers and just in awe of such a wonderful piece...in fact she knew how much I loved it and gifted it to me when I was only 7 years old ~ even then I was always crafting and remember those wonderful times she would sit with me and patiently take the time to teach me to make clothes, knit and embroider ~ so many happy memories. But back to this project and with this wonderful piece of embroidery in mind, I thought it would be fun to recreate these pieces in paper but with a twist and give them some dimension by using Tim Holtz's Funky Floral 3 die to create the flowers.

So, let's get started because it's time for the new challenge!
The backgrounds for both cards are created exactly the same, so I tend to make a few of these and then just cut them to size. I applied Frayed Burlap, Iced Spruce, Antique Linen and Vintage Photo Distress Oxide Inks to my Tim Holtz Glass Media Mat and then spritzed the inks with a light misting of water before swiping Mixed Media Heavyweight card panels through the inks, picking up the colour. Heat dry and if you need to add more colour, just keep dipping until you're happy. Once the card is thoroughly dry, I inked around the edges with Walnut Stain Distress Ink.

Beginning with card no.1...
...I cut the panel of inked card to measure 11.5 x 15cm and using the Ornate Trims stamp set by Tim Holtz, I stamped a border in Potting Soil Archival Ink, around the outside using two of the stamps from this set ~ using one stamp to stamp the first border at the top and bottom and a second, different stamp on the left and right hand sides.
I matted the background onto gold metallic kraft card, followed by a layer of blue card and a layer of kraft card. I then mounted these layers onto a panel of the burlap from the Textured Surfaces set, matted onto black soot kraft card and layered onto a kraft card blank.

Next I started to create those dimensional flowers...
...and for these I used a light weight card that I have in my stash. I added colour to the card by using Faded Jeans, Broken China and a hint of Blueprint Sketch Oxide Inks, applied to the mat in exactly the same way as before.

Once the card was dry, I then used the Funky Florals die to die cut the various sized petals that I would need for each flower ~ I tend to use about three or four layers, which include the central stamen pieces, to make one individual flower. Once I had enough pieces, I then just layered those petals, shaping each one as I go and building up the dimension.

As a finishing touch, I added Nuvo Crystal Drops to the centres of each flower.
I the used various shades of green kraft cardstock to die cut the leaves and foliage.

Moving onto my next layer, I took another piece of the inked background card and used the Stacked Postage die set to die cut a second panel. I inked the edges of this die cut before arranging my floral display onto the panel, adding some ephemera pieces that are placed directly onto the background and adhered using Matte Collage Medium.

I then mounted the finished panel onto a piece of gold metallic kraft stash cardstock, cut with the Stitched Rectangle die and inked with Gunmetal Mixative Ink and Mushroom Alcohol Ink, before I wrapped some twine around the bottom section of the layers.

I went on to attach the floral panel centrally onto the front of the covered card blank using foam pads for more dimension and attached a vintage button to the left hand side of the twine wrap.
To complete this card, I added a Nailhead Finding and a Beautiful Day Metallic Quotations Sticker in the bottom left hand corner.
The second card basically uses the same ideas as I used on the first...it's just a slightly different colour way and the flowers have pearl centres.

The background uses a further panel of the inked Mixed Media card and I just used different border stamps around the outside and added Hex Fasteners to each corner.

The flowers are coloured with Mermaid Lagoon, Salty Ocean and that small hint of Blueprint Sketch Oxide Inks and instead of using the crystal drops for the centres, I used Bauble Findings inked with Mushroom Alcohol Ink.
For the message panel, I used the Stitched Ovals die and stamped my message using wording from the Glorious Bouquet Stamp Set...
...before matting it over the top of a die cut section of card that I had stamped using the Botanical stamp from the Botanical and Batik stamp set.

I completed this card with a Hinge Clip and a Typed Token.
I hope you've enjoyed the creative process and all the techniques that have gone into making these projects but I also hope you've loved the inspiration behind these two cards...they mean a lot to me and hold a special place in my heart.

Don't forget, you can find more inspiration from my talented teamies over on the challenge blog and every week, one lucky random participant has the chance to win a $50 gift voucher from Simon Says Stamp. You have until Monday 8am Ohio time. 1pm UK time, 2 pm CET to join in and good luck....

Thank you so much for stopping by today and I'll see you very soon!
