Memories...

Hello friends...

Hope you all had a good weekend and as we face another month of lockdown here in England, I hope you're all staying safe and keeping well and ready for a brand new week over on the Simon Says Stamp Monday Challenge Blog!

This week our theme is REMEMBRANCE/THINKING OF YOU and this inspired me to create a project to commemorate the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month ~ Armistice Day! This day holds a special place in my heart as someone very close to our family fought in WW2! Sam, who I came to consider as my adopted grandfather, was a true English gentleman, and his war time stories about the time he spent overseas and the day of the D-Day landings always fascinated me, and even though he sadly passed away a few years ago, we will always remember how much this day meant to him and how he would wear his medals, together with a poppy to lay a wreath at the Cenotaph or attend the Festival of Remembrance at the Royal Albert Hall ~ we were very proud of this man and the contribution and sacrifices he made.

So with this in mind, I hope I've created a project that reflects how much this man would be proud of and here's how I created my very special Remembrance Day project...

I began by creating the poppies and for this I used an old favourite die ~ Tim Holtz's Tattered Florals and combined it with the flower from the larger of the two florals from Tim's Tropical die set and the stamens are one of the dies in the Funky Florals 3 die set. If you haven't got these dies, you really can use any floral die of your choosing and Tim has so many to choose from, it won't be too hard to find one that works.

To create the poppies, I used Dina Wakley's Cotton Watercolour Paper, spritzed with a combination of Candied Apple and Barn Door Distress Spray Stains. Once it was dry, I wanted to create two poppies and for this, I cut four layers of petals using the largest sized floral on the Tattered Florals die and two layers using the larger flower from the Tropical Die Set.

I also cut a third flower using this die and pulled the petals apart to create five separate petals that I will attach to the finished card.

After inking the edges of each layer with Walnut Stain Distress Ink, I shaped the petals to create a more realistic look, curling the edges in different directions, and then layered the Tattered Florals petal over the top of one another, slightly offsetting each layer. After inking the edges of the Tropical Thinlits die cut, I attached each one to the centres of each of my poppies, again shaping the petals and curling them to create dimension to each layer.

For the black stamens, I painted some tissue with Black Soot Distress Paint and then using the stamen die from the Funky Florals 3 set, I cut three layers of the paper, stuck these together and placed them in the centres of each flower. I completed the poppies by colouring a Bauble Adornment with Pitch Black Alcohol Ink and placing these in the centres of each flower.

The leaves are also made from the cotton watercolour paper, spritzed with Peeled Paint and Bundled Sage Distress Spray Stain and die cut using the leaf from the Funky Floral Large die set. Ink the edges with Walnut Stain and set these to one side.

Now we have the poppies ready and moving onto the background, I chose to keep it quite simple as I really wanted the poppies to be the focal point of this piece. After cutting a panel of Mixed Media Heavystock, (which I am so happy to have back in the larger sized pack) measuring 14 x 19cm, I spritzed a very light mist of water over the surface and then used a combination of Faded Jeans, Speckled Egg and Stormy Sky Distress Spray Stains to create colour, layering each stain in turn to build up the intensity I wanted.

I then applied a small amount of Black Soot Distress Ink to my glass mat and spritzed with a little more water before dipping the card into the inks.

After thoroughly heat drying the card, I inked the edges with Walnut Stain Distress Ink and then machine stitched a border around the outside.

To add a few layers to the inked background, I took my new favourite script stamp from the Stampers Anonymous The Poinsettia stamp set and using Black Soot Archival Ink, stamped the script randomly over the background. I then used the speckle stamp from the same set, inked with clear embossing powder and stamped this onto the background before sprinkling with gold embossing powder and heat embossing.

After mounting the inked card onto a piece of slate coloured cardstock, I then mounted it using foam pads onto a piece of black card. To add another layer to the piece, I applied some of Tim's Design Tape around the edges of the black card ~ this is one that I had in my stash, and I'm so sorry but I don't know which set it came from as mine have become a little mixed up in a box, lol!

Now to create that horizontal strip that sits across the centre of this piece...

...I cut a piece of watercolour card, 6 x 14cm, spritzed with water and after removing the spray nozzle from the bottles, I flicked small amounts of Black Soot, Walnut Stain, Faded Jeans, Stormy Sky and Chipped Sapphire Distress Spray Stains across the wet card, creating little pools of ink but keeping some white space around them. After heat drying the card, I stitched down each side and then mounted it onto my background using foam pads.

To create the plaque, I cut a panel of Blackout Kraft Stash and sanded it to reveal the kraft core before machine stitching a border around the edges.

For the wording I chose to use the Alphanumeric Label Die Set and cut the letters, and the date from silver Metallic Kraft Stash. I then attached each one to the blackout panel creating my plaque with the words ~ LEST WE FORGET and the date 11/11.

I matted the plaque onto silver metallic kraft stash, and a piece of chipboard painted with Black Soot Distress Paint and then mounted it onto my project with some more foam pads to create dimension.

I attached the poppies and leaves to cascade around the plaque and then added the petals as if they were tumbling down the card.

For the finishing details, in the top left hand corner, I added a Union Jack Ephemera piece taken from the Snippets Ephemera pack....

...and in the bottom right hand corner, I added a Clippings Sticker "in memory of' and a small heart that I had previous die cut and had left over from a previous project.

Finally, I placed a Hardware piece onto the panel, together with those tiny little crosses that are die cut using one of the dies from the Media Marks Thinlits Die set.

I hope you've enjoyed how this project was created and it's inspired you to make some poppies of your own that can be displayed to commemorate all those who have given so much to create a world that ok, at the moment might not be perfect but it's the world we will live in for many years to come!

All Wrapped Up....

Hello friends and welcome to the brand new Simon Says Stamp Monday Challenge and this week our theme is called IT'S A WRAP!

There are so many interpretations for this challenge and whether you decide to create wrapping paper, gift tags or gift boxes, or even if you decide to wrap something around your project ~ we can't wait to see what you make.

For my project, I decided to create some hand stamped wrapping paper for Halloween and added a dimensional floral decoration that is yep, you guessed it ~ wrapped around my parcel. So, I hope this project will inspire you with some ideas of your own and hope you'll join me for how I created this piece which is perfect for all those tricks or treats...
So let's get started, it's time to begin this week's challenge...

To begin with I took some plain kraft wrapping paper that I bought from my local store. I cut a panel of the paper that would fit around my parcel and laid it out in front of me on my glass media mat.

I then started stamping ~ inking up the Skull & Crossbones stamp from the Regions Beyond Stamp Set with the Black Soot ink from Tim's Archival Pad. I stamped the image across my paper, forming a continual pattern.
Once I was happy with the design, I used the same stamp and stamped the image a couple of times onto a post-it note. I cut around the outline of the stamped image to create two masks. I placed these over the top of the images I had already stamped onto the kraft paper before inking up the web stamp from the Tangled Web stamp set with Picket Fence Distress Ink, (if you prefer or if you don't have the Picket Fence, you can also use Hero Arts Unicorn White Ink which I find gives a really crisp white image against the kraft paper). I then stamped the web directly onto my kraft paper, stamping over the top of the masked images and moving the masks around as I created the continual web design over the entire sheet.
For any areas where the web didn't join up, I just took a white pen and drew the lines in ~ it's that easy! As a finishing touch to the paper, I took a white pencil and just added some feather strokes to create highlights on the skull.

To complete the paper, I took the 'Open If You Dare' stamp and stamped the wording in between the skulls before adding a few paint splatters as a finishing touch. I also used some of the spiders from the Halloween Remnant Rub set and placed these to crawl over the background of webs.
Moving onto the flower bouquet, I began with black rose which is made using Tim's Tattered Florals die. You can see how I create these roses HERE but for this rose, you will need to die the paper or card, whichever you choose to use, using Black Soot Distress Spray Stain followed by a misting of Antiqued Bronze Mica Spray.
Once I had my rose assembled, I then added some Boneyard Findings to the centre to look like spooky stamens.
For the foliage, I used a combination of the leaves ~ the autumnal leaves are die cut using the Fall Foliage die set and then coloured with Distress Oxide Inks in a variety of warm, autumn colours and then I used the Funky Floral 3 die set to die cut the black and gold foliage, cut from Classic Kraft Stash and Metallic Kraft Stash.

I wrapped a piece of hessian ribbon from my stash around the parcel, securing the ribbon with a small strip of tape at the back so that it will slide of the package in one piece and can be kept. I then tied a section of the Halloween twine around the centre of the ribbon.
For the floral arrangement, I started with the autumnal leaves, added some Spanish Moss and then layered my rose and black and gold foliage over the top.

As a finishing touch to the package and for the ultimate, trick or treat ~ I added a Remnant Rub and a 'poison' label.
Now, as an added extra and because every present needs a tag, I created a little matching one made using the smallest size of kraft tag from the Tim Holtz tag set. I stamped the web over the entire surface of the tag using Versamark Ink Pad and then sprinkled it with white embossing powder. I heated emboss the powder and then inked the edges of the tag with Ground Espresso Distress Ink.

I then placed some smaller die cut Fall Foliage leaves over a bed of moss and placed the 'boo' quote chip in the centre of the leaves before adding another Remnant Rub spider.

Attach some twine and there you have your matching tag....
...and all you need to do is wrap up your parcel, write your tag and present the present to someone who will only open it if they dare!!!!!!

Don't forget, you can find more inspiration from my talented teamies over on the challenge blog and every week, one lucky random participant has the chance to win a $50 gift voucher from Simon Says StampYou have until Monday 8am Ohio time. 1pm UK time, 2 pm CET to join in and good luck....

A Mother's Love...

Hello friends and welcome to a brand new Simon Says Stamp Monday Challenge! This week, the theme is all about HANDMADE FLOWERS and we challenge you to make some of your own! You can of course do this anyway you choose, maybe you will use die cut flowers, or stamp some of your own, or maybe you have your own ideas! Whatever you make we will be looking forward to seeing your beautiful blooms!

For my project, this challenge couldn't have come at a better time as here in the UK, we will be celebrating Mother's Day on the 26th March. So, with this in mind, I decided to create a special card for my Mum ~ she's highly sensitive to all fresh flowers, so what better than to create some handmade flowers that I know she will love!

...it's time for a new challenge!

To begin with I started by making my flowers and for these I used the Jumbo Tattered Florals Die to die cut some lightweight cotton calico fabric. For each flower I cut two of the medium sized six petal flower on the die and three of the smallest flower with five petals. I chose to use my two favourite colours ~ blue and orange and started by spritzing the fabric with a light mist of water. Then for the blue flowers, I used Broken China Distress Spray Stain and spritzed enough die cut petals to create two dimensional flowers. Using a piece of kitchen paper towel, squeeze out any excess colour or water from the fabric and then heat dry the colour stained die cut petals. You will find that you have some stain remaining on your sheet ~ don't waste this, I just spritz it with water and then mop it all up with a piece of card which I will use later on as a matting layer for my finished project. Create the orange flower in exactly the same way, using Spiced Marmalade Distress Spray Stain.

I then laid out all my petals onto a non stick craft sheet and using a paintbrush, I applied a coat of Clear Sculpture Medium over the top of each die cut. Don't oversaturate the material but apply a good even coverage onto the back and the front of the petals. This medium allows me to create dimension to the flower by giving a rigidity to the fabric so that I can sculpt the petals and the flower to create a wonderful 3D bloom ~ it's fabulous!
I then semi dried my coated petals before starting to shape each flower by taking the two large petals and three of the small petals, layering each section over the top of one another and slightly offsetting each of the die cuts. Pinching the middle of the flowers together, scrunch and shape the petals whilst the medium is drying and then set aside to dry completely. I left them overnight.

Once my flowers were holding the shape, I poked a small hole though the centre of all the layers and then added some beautiful pearl stamens. After fixing the stamens into place with some florist wire, my flowers were complete.

The leaves are created in exactly the same way as the flowers, die cut using the Jumbo Tattered Florals die and colouring them with Peeled Paint Distress Spray Stain before adding a coat of the Sculpture Medium, shaping them and allowing them to dry until the material has stiffened and will hold it's shape.

Now that I have my flowers, I moved onto the background and for this I cut a piece of watercolour card, 14cm square and misted the card with water and then, swished it through Antique Linen and Spun Sugar Distress Stain applied to a craft sheet. If you need more colour, just pick up any of the remaining stain on your sheet before heat drying the card.

Once the card was dry, I placed the central section of the card into the Lace Texture Fade, this will emboss the central section but leave a plain edged border top and bottom. Emboss the card through your machine and then using a blending tool, apply some Vintage Photo Distress Oxide Ink over the top of the raised areas and around the edge. Mist the inked card with some more water and allow the ink to do what it does best. Heat dry the card thoroughly before machine stitching around the outside.
Matt the embossed card onto a piece of gold metallic card, followed by the stained card from earlier. Mount these layers onto corrugated card, distressed with a little gesso and then matt onto orange card from the Classic Kraft Paper Stash, as the final layer. Mount all your layers onto a black card blank.
Attach your flowers to the bottom left hand corner and I added some real twigs from my garden ~ it was a lucky find to get that twirly one!
To add the "LOVE" message, I used the Alpha Deco Die (love this die so much) to die cut gold metallic card and also Black Soot Kraft Core cardstock. I then layered each of the gold pieces over the top of the black to create a drop shadow before attaching them to my card.
As a finishing touch I added a metal heart and some gold sequins.
...and that completes this card which I hope has given you some ideas for your Mother's Day cards. Or if you don't want to create cards, then these flowers can also be used on home decor pieces, even hair decorations ~ the choices are endless!

You're The One...

Hello friends

Hope you all had a great weekend and ready for a brand new week and a brand new Simon Says Stamp Monday Challenge! This week the theme is YOUNG AT HEART and of course, is all about Valentine's Day and as an added bonus, if you love Simon Says Stamp products, then the team are also showcasing a selection of these within their projects!

I decided to create a Valentine's Day card but I didn't go down the traditional route of red and went with soft vintage tones of neutrals, pink, gold and duck egg blue.

It's time for a brand new challenge...

...and this is how I created my card!

To begin with I started with my background and cut a piece of mixed media card to roughly the same size as the background stamp that I was using.

I then added a layer of Antique Linen Distress Paint over the surface of the card, heat dried the paint before layering further Distress Paints ~ Hickory Smoke, Pumice Stone and Frayed Burlap to create my background. Heat dry the painted surface thoroughly!

Then, using an old expired credit card, I scraped some gesso over the top of the layers and again gave it a blast of heat to dry it.

To add that little extra hint of colour, I added a touch of Cracked Pistachio Distress Crayon to my background and just blended with my fingertips.

Ink up the Love Is Background Stamp using Versamark Ink or clear embossing ink and then sprinkle some gold embossing powder over the top. Tap away the excess powder and heat emboss until molten and shiny.
Flick some gesso splats across the embossed surface before matting and layering the background onto  a piece of gold metallic card, followed by a layer of pink kraft stock card. I mounted the matted layers onto a white card blank, inked around the edges with Antique Linen Distress Ink.

Now for my layers and to begin with I used the Tim Holtz Ornate Frame die to die cut a piece of chipboard. Prime the chipboard with a layer of gesso before adding some Grit Paste to the surface, leaving the paste slightly stippled to create some gorgeous texture.

Once the paste is dry, add some Gold Rush Alchemy Paint over the top and again leave to dry.

Attach the frame onto your background, layering it with pieces of torn corrugated card, dry brushed with gesso. Cut a piece of linen from the Textile Surfaces pack and add small amounts of gesso and Victorian Velvet Distress Paint onto the surface. Ink the Tim Holtz "You're The One" quote with Jet Black Archival Ink and stamp directly onto the linen.
Attach the message over the top of the layers. At this stage I attached a Hinge Clip, altered with some Treasure Gold Gilding Wax and then added a loop pin and a Heart Charm and just clipped onto the side of the layered section.
For the handmade paper rose, I used Tim's Tattered Florals die and die cut lightweight card, coloured with Victorian Velvet Distress Stain. I then created my dimensional bloom, inking the edges of each layer and shaping the petals to create a more realistic look.
Attach the rose to the card, together with a shabby bow made from crinkle ribbon and coloured with Tumbled Glass and Antique Linen Distress Stain.
Finally, I added some small hearts to my background! I actually had these teeny little hearts on my desk from a previous project ~ they are the negative sections from the SSS Stacked Heart Die and I just thought they were the perfect finishing touch to the card and placed them around the frame area.
To complete the card, I added some Memory Hardware metallic beads to each corner.
So, I hope you enjoyed how I created this card and it's inspired you with a few ideas for Valentine's Day!
