Happiness Is A Butterfly....

Hello friends and welcome to a brand new week on the Simon Says Stamp Monday Challenge.

This week, the DT are showcasing products from Studio Light and combining it with our theme, TAG IT! We'd love for you to join us and of course, unless you want to ~ you don't have to use Studio Light products within your makes.

For my project, I chose to create a Size 8 Etcetera Tag and combined some Studio Light Ephemera with Tim Holtz products.

So, let's get started and here's how I created this tag!

To begin with I used a Size 8 Etcetera Tag, and a Size 8 Mixed Media Heavystock tag.

TAG

Using the Mixed Media Heavystock tag, I chose to add colour with Distress Spray Stains, Oxide Sprays and Mica Spray in the following colours:

DISTRESS SPRAY STAINS: Ground Espresso, Uncharted Mariner, Speckled Egg
OXIDE SPRAYS: Speckled Egg
MICA SPRAYS: Crooked Broomstick

After spritzing the tag with a light misting of water, I then spritzed each of the Distress Spray Stains, and the Oxide Sprays to add colour to the tag. Once I was happy with the blend, I heat dried the inks and then flicked some Crooked Broomstick Mica Spray across the surface to create the splatters. Once again, I heat dried the tag.

Across the bottom section of the tag, I added a separate piece of card, spritzed with the same colours and cut to approx 1". I stamped a border in clear embossing ink, using one of the Ornate Trims from the Stampers Anonymous stamp set and after sprinkling gold embossing powder over the ink, I heat embossed the powder until molten. I then attached the border strip, and machine stitched around the edge of the tag, and along the edges of the strip. I then adhered the tag to the Etcetera Tag using Matte Collage Medium. I did add some stamping to the tag, but in the finished version, it got hidden behind the ephemera...so, just ignore that!

My background is now complete, and is ready to add some embellishments...

STUDIO LIGHT EPHEMERA and RULER PIECE

I began building the scene by snapping a ruler piece into two. Using one half of the ruler, I inked the surface with Walnut Stain Distress Ink and then attached it across my tag.

I then chose a selection of the ephemera pieces from the Studio Light Paper Elements People and Botanics Grunge Collection pack, including the little girl, the butterflies and the foliage. I loved the colour tones and the white butterflies from this pack and apart from the little girl, which I colour tinted using Distress Crayons, I left the other pieces as they were.

I attached the foliage piece directly onto the tag using foam pads, which I splattered very lightly with Picket Fence Distress Paint. I then layered the Milk Cap over the top, which once again I gave a light splattering of white paint.
Finally, I added the little girl which I had colour tinted with Distress Crayons. I placed a butterfly behind her and lifted the wings to add dimension.
In the photo below you can see the dimension of this piece...

FLOURISHES

In this arrangement, I added two of the idea-ology metal Flourishes. To add colour to the metal idea-ology Flourishes, I used Statue and Sterling Foundry Wax on each of these pieces, applying one layer of wax at a time and then adding the second layer over the top, but not giving the metal a complete coverage. This will allow the layer of wax underneath to show through and create the variation of colour to the metal.

After I'd heat set the wax on all the pieces, I applied some dribbles of Mushroom alcohol ink over the metal to add more of a vintage feel to the pieces. I then rubbed some Black Soot and Crackling Campfire Distress paint over the surface, making sure it settled into all the recesses and the detail, before wiping away the excess paint and polishing the metal with a soft cloth to bring back the shine from the waxes.

I attached each flourish to the tag with Matte Collage Medium.

FINISHING DETAILS

We're nearly there and all that's left is the finishing details.

So that the little girl is grounded, I added some moss around the base of her feet and along the top edge of the ruler piece.

I also added some dried seed heads from my stash...

...and a few Tim Holtz Bouquet Findings, coloured with Wild Honey Distress Spray Stain.

As the finishing touch to the arrangement, I placed two of the smallest butterflies from the Studio Light pack onto this piece.

To complete the tag, I added some Word Clippings  ~ "my beautiful butterfly" taken from Tim's Clippings Stickers. I cut the sentiment into three separate words before attaching them to my tag and adding some pencil shading around each.

That's completes my project for this week and I hope you love the piece I've made...

Santa Baby...

Hello friends...

Another week has flown by and here we are in the final month of 2023 and counting down the days until Christmas!

As always, a new week brings a brand new Simon Says Stamp Monday Challenge and this week our theme is all about Winter Blues and we hope you'll join us and play along!

For my make, I chose to create a project using a very special die set, the adorable Walter! This Tim Holtz set is exclusive to SSS and is available for a limited time only, whilst stocks last and all you need to do is add $25 or more of Tim's branded products into your basket, search for Walter and he will be waddling to you as a FREE gift!

So back to my card, where Walter is all dressed up for Christmas, ready to surprise his Santa Baby and little penguin girlfriend, Winifred and here's how I created this card!

To begin with I made a white card blank measuring 20 x 15cm. I then cut a panel of mixed media heavystock card, slightly smaller in size than my card blank and spritzed this panel with a light misting of water.

To add colour, I used the following sprays:

DISTRESS SPRAY STAINS; Walnut Stain, Speckled Egg, Broken China

OXIDE SPRAYS: Speckled Egg

After spritzing more water over the inks to blend them, I heat dried the card panel and machine stitched a border around the outside. I then applied Grit Paste through the Speckles Layering Stencil, placing it at the top of the card, and only applying the paste so that it stops about half way down. Once dry, I mounted the background onto my card blank, leaving a very narrow border around the outside.

LAYERS

Moving onto the main background and for this I cut a panel of Distress Watercolour card, 17 x 12cm.

I spritzed the card with more water and then applied Mica Stains ~ Snow Flurries, Winter Frost, Shiny Bauble. I spritzed the colours to create a slight graduation of intensity, so that the bottom section will remain mostly white, with just a hint of the spray showing. Allow the colours to blend and then heat dry the surface.

Once again, I machine stitched a border around the edge and then applied more of the Grit Paste through the Speckles Layering Stencil to create the look of snow. I added the paste so that it will align with the paste/snow on the background panel attached to the card blank.

When dry, I matted the panel onto silver metallic kraft card and attached it to my card using foam pads.

TREES

To begin with I coloured a piece of mixed media heavystock card using the following combination:

DISTRESS SPRAY STAINS: RUSTIC WILDERNESS, BUNDLED SAGE, SPECKLED EGG

OXIDE SPRAYS: SPECKLED EGG

MICA STAINS: FROSTED JUNIPER

Once the card was dry and the blend was just right, I used the trees from the Forest Shadows Die Set to cut my two separate images to create the background layer and the foreground. I also cut a second layer of white card, which I used as a drop shadow by adhering this piece behind each of the green layers.

To create the snowy effect on the edges of the trees, I brushed the Embossing Dabber very lightly over the tips and then sprinkled White embossing Powder over the top. Tap away the excess and heat emboss the powder.

Because I wanted to add some glitter and snow, I applied a light coverage of Micro Glaze over the top of each die cut. This will stop any ink turning your snow green and bleeding into the Snowfall Paste, which I added along the bottom of the die cut and to some of the branches.

I allowed for the paste to dry, before drizzling some Glossy Accents over the paste. Working quickly, I sprinkled Mica Flakes and Rock Candy Glitter over the top, tapped away the excess and set this aside to dry...

...and once the pieces are dry enough to handle, I attached them to my card front, placing them across the background, slightly overlapping the edges and creating different heights to each piece by adding foam pads.

WALTER AND WINIFRED THE PENGUINS

Both of these adorable penguins are cut from a combination of Black Heavystock card, White Distress Watercolour Card and Mixed Media Heavystock card. Each of these card surfaces will create different effects and that is why I chose to use this combination.

Once all the pieces are cut, I then painted the accessories with Distress Paints ~ Santa's hat, the scarf, the beaks, feet, bows and glasses.

I also gave each penguin a touch of pink of their cheeks.

After assembling each image, I wanted to add an extra accessory to Winifred, some ear muffs.

These are actually die cut using dies from the Chilly and Freeze, which were the DieCember set from Tim, in 2022! This accessory fits perfectly and I just added some tiny white polka dots and the tiny bow.

Attach each penguin onto the project with foam pads.

SENTIMENT

The sentiment, "It's A Wonderful Life", is from the Sketch Greenery Stampers Anonymous stamp set. I stamped the message with Barn Door Archival Ink, onto a die cut Vintage Label, which I lightly spritzed with the Shiny Baubles Mica Stain, just to give a smattering of colour.

I attached the label underneath the scene with foam pads to add height, and then added two Hardware Heads to either side of the label. Each Hardware Head is painted with Speckled Egg Distress Paint.

FINISHING DETAILS

We're nearly there and all that's left is to add the tiny details of the cloud in the sky and the shining star.

The cloud is cut from watercolour card, using the Sizzix Christmas Cutouts Die Set and inked with Lost Shadow Distress Ink. I attached this to my background with foam pads.

Finally, I added the gold star, cut from gold metallic kraft card using the star die from the Holiday Blocks die set.

I cut two of these layers and then cut each layer in half to create four stars, which I then adhered over the top of one another to make one complete star, which I attached to my panel, adding a silver Metallic Droplet in the centre.

...and that completes my Christmas card, which I hope you love and will make you smile to banish those winter blues!

Thank You...

Hello everyone and Happy Monday...

Hope you are all well and had a lovely weekend and now ready to join us for the brand new Simon Says Stamp Monday Challenge. This week our theme is all about THANKS and THANKSGIVING and we would love for you to play along and share your makes with us.

For my project, I created a Size 8 Etcetera Tag which features old and new dies from Tim Holtz and Sizzix, including one of my all time favourite dies, Feathered Friends who is popping by to say thank you to everyone who visits my blog and socials, because it's your kind words that make all the hard work so worthwhile!

So let's get started and here's how I created this tag....

This project uses a Size 8 Stampers Anonymous/Tim Holtz Etcetera Tag and Heavystock Tag.

TAG BACKGROUND

To begin with I coloured my tag background using Distress Spray Stains, Mica Sprays and Oxide Sprays in the following colours.

OXIDE SPRAYS: Speckled Egg

MICA SPRAYS: Tree Lot, Unravelled

DISTRESS SPRAYS: Rustic Wilderness, Black Soot, Speckled Egg

I misted he tag with water, I then spritzed the colours listed above onto the tag, allowing them to blend. You can use more water if necessary.

Once the tag was dry, I placed the Rosette Layering Stencil over the top and applied Translucent Grit Paste through the stencil with a palette knife. Working quickly, I removed the stencil and separately applied a sprinkle of Rustic Wilderness Distress Glaze and Gold Embossing Powder over the pasted areas. Set the tag to one side to dry and once I could feel that the paste has set, I heat embossed the paste on a gentle heat setting until molten and shiny.

Across the bottom of the tag, I added my sentiment using a strip of vellum. The vellum is cut to measure 1.5cm and on the right hand side I stamped the sentiment in clear embossing ink. Sprinkle with gold embossing powder and heat emboss. Wrap the vellum strip around the tag, securing the ends at the back and on the left hand side, I hammered a nail tack through the tag. This helps to pin down that strip and secure it.

After machine stitching a border around the edge, I adhered the tag onto my Etcetera Tag.

I threaded a piece of rope through the hole in the top...

...and then hung a Heart Adornment from a mini pin. The Heart Adornment is painted with Candied Apple Distress Paint, which adds colour to the heart itself and once dry, I added a touch of gilding wax from my stash to accentuate the beading around the outside.

FEATHERED FRIEND

We can now start creating the scene and firstly, I made my feathered friend and I used the larger bird in the set for this make and cut all the pieces from Mixed Media Heavystock card. The Distress Inks that I used to colour him are as follows:

Mowed Lawn, Rustic Wilderness, Fossilised Amber, Walnut Stain, Gathered Twigs

I layered all my die cut pieces together to assemble the bird and then added the wing using foam pads which help to create movement.

I then added some white and black pen work to bring out the detail.

I placed the bird onto my tag using foam pads and sat him in a nest made from Spanish Curly Moss that I have in my stash.

ARTSY LEAVES

In amongst the moss, I added some autumn leaves and for these I used the Sizzix Artsy Leaves Die Set by Tim Holtz.

I cut all my leaves from Mixed Media Heavystock Card that I coloured with the following:

DISTRESS SPRAY STAIN: Crackling Campfire, Spiced Marmalade, Vintage Photo, Aged Mahogany, Peeled Paint, Walnut Stain

MICA SPRAY: Unravelled, Mulled Cider and Fallen Acorn

After cutting the leaves and placing the veins over them, I then added touches of gold and for this I used Prima Metal Flakes. I smeared some Flake Glue over the raised areas, and once the glue has changed colour and become translucent, I applied the flakes, removing any excess with a hard brush.

I then inked the edges of the leaves and arranged them around the bird, by tucking them into the moss.

Finally I added some dried flower stems and small clumps of reindeer moss.

We're nearly there and all that's left is to add the two Large Fasteners at the top of the tag. I cut the legs of the fastener and then hammered them to give them all those little dents before attaching them directly to my tag using Matte Collage Medium.

So that's my tag finished and I hope you love the ideas and inspiration I've used on this make...
