Make Magic - Simon Says Stamp Blog Hop Day 2

Hello friends and welcome to Day 2 of the Simon Says Stamp Make Magic Blog Hop...
Today, I'm really happy to be joining so many talented designers as one of the stops on this hop, (you can catch up with Day 1, HERE) and if you'd like to see this fabulous new release in full, then just pop over to Simon Says Stamp.

You might have arrived here from the extremely talented Keisha's blog, but if not and you've just popped by and would love to join us for this fun hop, then don't worry because you can head back to the beginning over on Simon Says Stamp blog.

There are so many gorgeous new products in this release, and I can guarantee you'll be spoilt for choice and feel so happy and uplifted by every single one of them.

For my card, I chose to create a project inspired by the vintage farm and agricultural posters and for this I used the Sunburst Wafer Die and Sunshine and Rainbows Sentiment Strips.
So let's get started and here's how I created this card...
I cut a panel of White Mixed Media Heavystock to measure 14.5 x 11.5cm and inked the background with Tumbled Glass and Speckled Egg Distress Inks, using a blending tool.

I then spritzed the inked panel with a light misting of water before heat drying it thoroughly.

After machine stitching a border around the outside, I mounted it onto a piece of burlap, slightly larger than the panel to create a border and adhered it with Matte Collage Medium. I followed with a panel of yellow kraft card taken from Tim Holtz's Warm Kraft Stack, adhered with SSS Tape Runner Pens before matting these layers, using foam pads, onto a panel of patterned paper from the Memoranda Paper Stash, which I then mounted onto a black card blank.
Moving onto the next stage and that glorious Sunburst Die. I used the die to cut Mixed Media Heavystock card which I then inked with Scattered Straw and Mustard Seed Distress Inks. I also blended a small amount of Crackling Campfire at the bottom of the sunburst, blending it upwards for an ombre effect and also around the edges.
With the panel inked, I then splattered water over the surface, dabbing away the excess with a paper towel and heat dried to set the ink and dry the card.
I mounted the sunburst over the top of my blue panel using foam pads to add height and dimension.
With the sunburst in place, I added the embellishment and for this I used a Tim Holtz idea-ology Milk Cap  and sanded the edges before inking them with Walnut Stain Distress Ink. I attached the milk cap in the centre of the semi circle at the bottom of the sunburst, slightly overlapping the edge. In the centre of the milk cap, I attached an Entomology Adornment from Tim Holtz's idea-ology range.

To add colour to the metal, I used Alcohol Inks ~ Gilded Alloy on the body and Aqua on the wings. I added a small amount of Mushroom over the surface to knock back the ink and add more of a vintage feel.
For the sentiment, I used one of the new Sunshine and Rainbows Sentiment Strips ~ "Sending a Little Sunshine To Brighten Your Day". I cut the strip to size and mounted it on a piece of Gold Metallic Kraft Stash card, leaving a very narrow border showing around the outside.
I attached the sentiment strip to my sunburst panel with foam pads.
To complete the card, I added some gold Metallic Droplets around the semi circle of the Sunburst Die.
...and that's my card finished! I hope you love this piece and feel inspired by the wonderful new products in the release.

Black Coffee...

Hi everyone and welcome to a brand new week at the Simon Says Stamp Monday Challenge Blog!

This week our theme is all about "FOOD AND DRINK" and the DT are hoping to inspire you with some gourmet delights and if you would like to join us and play along, then all the details of how you can do this are below! We're looking forward to seeing your makes...

For my project, I created a tag all about one of my favourite cities in the world...Paris, and the wonderful café society. So with this in mind, I wanted to create a vintage style piece that was inspired by the frontages of the cafés and created these using Tim Holtz and Sizzix dies. Also, how could I resist the temptation of not using the brand new Distress colour that Tim launched on his YouTube Live on Saturday! If you haven't checked it out yet, then what are you waiting for because it is the most gorgeous shade of blue called Prize Ribbon and I combined this with other Distress Spray Stains including Ground Espresso which had the food/drink link!

So let's get started ~ it's time for me to share this project and here's how I made this piece...

To begin with I used a Size 8 Etcetera Tag, but I didn't create my background directly onto the surface! Instead I used the same sized Mixed Media Heavystock tag for this.

I then cut a panel of Mixed Media Heavystock card using the Bubbling Thinlits Die.

I started by adding colour to my tag and the die cut and chose a combination of Prize Ribbon, Ground Espresso, Speckled Egg Distress Spray Stains, together with Salvaged Patina and Speckled Egg Oxide Sprays.

I sprayed the Distress Spray Stains and Oxide Sprays directly onto a tag and the panel, both of which had already been lightly misted water. I allowed for the inks to blend and create the colour I wanted, which was a rich, indigo denim blue.

I then adhered the die cut bubbles over the tag to create the textured layer and also added a layer of Matte Collage Medium over the surface to seal the inks.

I allowed for the tag to dry before rubbing Walnut Stain Distress Crayon over the top, blending out any of the harsh lines with a semi dry baby wipe.

Finally, I spritzed a very light misting of Speckled Egg over the tag and just allowed this to dry on it's own.

Once the tag was thoroughly dry, I then added some rusty colours around the edges and for this I used Crackling Campfire, Antiqued Bronze, Black Soot and Ground Espresso Distress Paints which I applied one at a time, drying in between layers to build the colour and create the rust finish.

With the tag ready, I machine stitched a border around the edge and then attached it to my Etcetera Tag with Matte Collage Medium.

Now for the embellishments and I used the Cafe Colorize Thinlits Die Set for my 'coffee cup'. I cut each individual piece from Mixed Media heavystock card and coloured them with a combination of brown Distress Inks to build up the layers. The only colour I used was Tumbled Glass for the band. I applied the inks directly to the card with a blending tool. To add a bit more intensity of colour, I added shading with Polychromos Pencils before I assembled the cup and the plume of steam.

I wanted to sit my cup on a ledge and used two Etcetera pieces to create an 'L' shape. I used the smallest and narrowest Pinked Etcetera Trim and added a straight edged trim which is in the Webs Trims.

On the pinked trim, I used a strip of paper from the Backdrops Volume 2 and chose this piece because of it's restaurant/cafe theme and using the Decorative Trims Thinlits Die set, I cut the specific section that I wanted to use.

I attached my die cut trim to the Etcetera Trim and cut away the excess before applying a layer of Matte Collage Medium to seal it.

I then added some rusty crusty layers to each end of the trim using Translucent Grit Paste and placed a Hardware Head onto either end, sinking it into the paste. I only applied a small amount of the paste as I don't want it to become to heavy, it's just to add texture to the smooth paper.

Once the paste was dry, I used the same colours of Distress Paint as I used around the edges of the tag and then applied a light touch of Gilding Wax over the top. This is from my own stash...

I attached the trim across my tag and then attached the cup using foam pads and placed this onto a small piece of Mummy Cloth that I dyed with Frayed Burlap and Antique Linen Sprays.

To complete the coffee cup, I added three metallic droplets around the die cut plume of steam.

All that's left to do is the wording. I cut the word CAFE using the Alphanumeric Bold and the word Paris using the Stretch Lower Thinlits Die set. All the letters are cut four separate times and layered over one another to resemble the thickness of chipboard.

I wanted to create a worn look to the lettering but also create an enamelled finish and so I used Embossing Glazes and gold embossing powder.

CAFE: Speckled Egg, Walnut Stain and Gold Embossing Powder

PARIS: Antique Linen, Walnut Stain and Gold Embossing Powder

I applied Tim's Embossing Dabber over the surface of the lettering and then applied each layer of the Glazes one at a time, reapplying the dabber between layers. I recommend to always start with a solid layer of the palest colour of glaze to begin with and then a sprinkle of the Walnut Stain over the top. I heat embossed the powders until molten. This will build up the thickness of the glaze and create a beautiful enamelled effect. I then finished with a sprinkling of gold embossing powder over the top which I heat embossed.

With the letters ready, I added the CAFE lettering onto gold metallic kraft stash to add a shadow and attached it to the left of the cup, running vertically down the side.

I attached the Paris lettering beneath my ledge, allowing it to slightly overhang the bottom.

Finally, I added a hinge clip, altered with Distress Paints, Speckled Egg, Picket Fence and Crackling Campfire, hung a Hook Clasp from it and added a Thought Token on the end, which I altered with Picket Fence Distress Crayon to accentuate the wording.

...as always, if you make anything, or been inspired by anything that you've seen here on my blog ~ then please, let me know by tagging me on social media or leaving a comment here and I will be right over to take a look!

Free To Fly...

Hello friends and a really big hello and welcome to all the new followers that have joined me over the last few weeks...I hope you'll enjoy my blog and all the projects I share and feel free to say hello at any time!

Today, I'm sharing the first of my two samples that I created for the recent Tim Holtz YouTube live for the launch of the brand new Sizzix 2021 Chapter 3 dies. If you missed the live on the 10th July, or if you just want to watch it again, and again ~ then you can catch up with all the fun HERE and there's also a recap and all the maker's projects on Tim's blog.

So, back to my project and this one was the framed panel that I made using a few of the new products from Chapter 3 ~ Butterfly 3D Impresslits Cut & Emboss, the Switchlits Seal and the Leafy Twigs and combining them with a couple of older dies, Funky Wreath and Alphanumeric Label Thinlits Dies.

I wanted to keep this looking very organic in it's style ~ it was all about nature and botanical beauty, so I decided to use earthy colours and chose to use blues, greens and browns throughout.

FRAMED PANEL

To begin with I took the framed panel. This comes in two pieces and I painted the wooden frame and the backboard panel using Gathered Twigs and Walnut Stain Distress Paints, blending the paint colours together to give a richness to the wood. I then applied a touch of Black Soot Distress Paint over the surface. I used the dry brushing technique to just allow the paint to kiss the wood, you don't want to make it too dark or obliterate the brown.

Once I was happy, I allowed it to dry before applying Treasure Gold Gilding Wax over the beading around the edge of the frame to accentuate it.

BACKGROUND

Setting the frame to one side, I moved onto the background and cut a panel of Mixed Media Heavystock to measure the same size as the aperture of the frame.

I then inked the cardstock with Speckled Egg, Antique Linen and Evergreen Bough Distress Spray Stain, and a hint of Speckled Egg Oxide Spray.

I misted the inks with water to create a blend and then heat dried the surface before adhering it onto the centre of my backboard panel using Matte Collage Medium to secure it and adding a light coat of the medium over the top.

Whilst that was drying I used the Leafy Twigs Thinlits die set to die cut two panels of Mixed Media Heavystock card. Once these panels were cut, I then used the Embossing Dabber over the surface. As I mentioned at the beginning I wanted a natural look to this panel, so I only applied the dabber half of the Leafy Twigs die cut, leaving the other half un-inked. It doesn't matter where you start or stop the inking, but don't create a straight line as this will look unnatural ~ just apply it randomly.

I then sprinkled the surface with Antique Linen Embossing Glaze, tapped away the excess and heat embossed the glaze. I repeated this process using Speckled Egg Embossing Glaze, and then Peeled Paint but on these applications, I only sprinkled random areas of the panel with the powder, as I want to create a variation in colour. The final layer of embossing is with gold embossing powder and once again, I used a fine sprinkle over the surface before I heat embossed the powder. Repeat this process for the second die cut panel and then attach to the background, trimming the panels so they will fit inside the frame once you attach it.

To complete the background I added some Design Tape, (this can be any design of your choosing) around the four edges to create an inner border frame and then I attached the wooden frame over the top, clamping it with bulldog clips so that it will be secure once the Matte Collage Medium is dry.
With the frame drying, I moved onto the inner panel which is the largest sized Vignette Panel. I spritzed  the panel with Speckled Egg Oxide Spray and allowed it to dry before I added a good covering of Crackle Paste over the entire surface.

I did find that the oxide spray seeped through the crackle paste but this was a happy accident as it created the perfect colour for the panel.

Once the crackle paste was dry and the crackles appeared, I ran Walnut Stain Distress Crayon over the top and with a slightly damp brush, I blended the colour to sink into the crackles to accentuate them.

I attached the crackled panel to my frame panel and added some Mummy Cloth around the edge of the wooden panel. The cloth is dyed with Frayed Burlap and Antique Linen Distress Spray Stains.

My frame is now complete and ready for the focal point.

WREATH

For this I started with the Funky Wreath. I cut the wreath from cardstock that I inked with Peeled Paint and Bundled Sage Distress Spray Stains and cut it a couple of times to create layers before attaching these over the top of one another, slightly offsetting them.

I cut some of the individual pieces and tucked these into the wreath to create more foliage, and add more dimension and frothiness to the overall look.
I attached the finished wreath over a Mica Sheet and adhered it to the wooden Vignette Panel before placing Hardware Heads onto the opposite corners.
In the centre of the wreath I used the amazing Seal Switchlit. I cut one of the Switchlit designs from Gold Metallic kraft stash and then layered a circle of felt in the centre before attaching this to centre of my Funky Wreath, using foam pads to secure it into place. You can see the layers in the photo below, which also show the dimension of this piece.

PLAQUE

Beneath the wreath I added my plaque. This is a piece of metallic kraft stash cut to size and using the Alphanumeric Label Dies, I cut the letters for FREE TO FLY.

I attached the letters to my metallic plaque and then with these in place, I applied Black Soot Distress Paint over the top. Allow for the paint to become slightly tacky but not dry and then remove the majority of it with a paper towel. You will find that the black paint knocks back the shiny metallic look. I then attached the metallic plaque to a piece of black chipboard which is slightly larger in size and applied Translucent Grit Paste around the edges. Once dry, I coloured the paste with Crackling Campfire, Ground Espresso and Black Soot Distress Paints to create the look of rust. I then rubbed some Gilding Wax over the surface to accentuate the raised areas and the lettering.

I attached the plaque to my panel, placing it directly beneath the wreath and placing it over the top of one of the idea-ology ruler piece from the Odds and Ends idea-ology adornments set.

Beneath this I added a Hardware Pull, attaching it with Matte Collage Medium and placed a Be Brave Sentiments Label Sticker inside.

BUTTERFLY

We're nearly there and all that's left is the beautiful butterfly...
For this I cut the butterfly twice from Mixed Media Heavystock. I always mist the card before running it through my machine, and always run it through 3 times for a really deep impression.
With my butterflies in front of me, I then added the colour and for this I used the Embossing Glazes to create an enamel effect.

I added the glazes one at a time to build up the shading and variation, sprinkling them onto the specific areas of the wings and body. Between each of the applications of glaze, I applied the Embossing Dabber and for the smaller, more detailed areas, I used Embossing Pens.

The colours I used were:
SPECKLED EGG
ANTIQUE LINEN
RUSTIC WILDERNESS
CRACKED PISTACHIO
SALVAGED PATINA
WALNUT STAIN
RUSTY HINGE
To complete the butterfly, I added a touch of gold embossing powder to the body. Repeat this process on the second die cut.

With the two die cut butterflies finished, I then layered them over the top of one another, ensuring that I only attached them by their bodies, leaving the wings to be shaped and lifted for height and dimension.

I adhered the butterfly into place.
Finally, I added a Field Notes Snippets Ephemera piece in the top left hand corner of the frame.
I hope you love this project and feel inspired with the ideas using all the amazing new dies and embossing folders ~ they really are such a gorgeous collection and work so well together.

Thank you so much to Paula, Tim and Mario for all the love and support you constantly give the makers, it's appreciated more than you know thank you so much for taking the time to stop by today!

The Marvellous Summer of 1958

Hello friends...

Hope you've all had a wonderful weekend and ready for the brand new week ahead! Did you see Tim's epic YouTube live launch of the brand new releases from Sizzix Chapter 3?! If you didn't, then don't worry as you can catch up with the replay here and of course, as always, I was so excited to be invited to be one of the makers for this release, (thank you Tim, Paula and Mario) and will be sharing my projects very soon!

But back to today and the start of a brand new Simon Says Stamp Monday Challenge. This week our theme is called, Lazy Days of Summer and if you'd love to play along then we can't wait to see what you will be creating and hope you'll join us!

For my project, I decided to create a framed panel celebrating one of my favourite fashion eras, the 1950's ~ I've just binge watched (again!!!) The Fabulous Mrs Maisel and that was my inspiration for this piece. I used some of the brand new releases from Sizzix Chapter 3 and combined these with older Sizzix dies and idea-ology to make a vintage style frame all about the summer of 1958!

So let's get started ~ it's time for me to share this project and here's how I made this piece...

I started by painting my framed panel and as all of you Tim addicts probably know by now this piece is one of my favourites and comes in two separate pieces that you attach ~ the baseboard and the wooden frame.

I began by attaching my frame to the baseboard using Matte Collage Medium and then painting the frame and the edge of the baseboard with Weathered Wood Distress Paint and once the paint was dry, I then added some Crackle Paste to both pieces, which helped to give it more of a worn, vintage feel.

I allowed for the crackles to appear before running the Walnut Stain Distress crayon over the surface to accentuate the pasted areas and the beadwork around the frame.

Setting the frame to one side, I moved onto the surface that I will be using as a background and for this I chose one of the papers from the Backdrop 1 set by Tim Holtz and after cutting it down to size so that it will fit inside the aperture of the frame but I also allowed a 1cm extra measurement on all four sides of the panel.

I then pushed the paper into the aperture and scored it around each of the four edges to create the perfect fit.

Removing the paper from the frame, I then went around the edges, creating rips and tears. Once I was happy with the look, I added a machine stitched border along the scorelines and then adhered the paper panel into place using Matte Collage Medium, allowing the ripped edges to come up the sides of the frame. I also added a coat of the medium over the paper to seal it.

To add some more vintage flair to the paper, I ran my Walnut Stain Distress Crayon over the surface of the paper and with a semi dry baby wipe, I blended the crayon to get rid of any harsh lines.

With the panel in place, I moved onto the elements to tell the story and first I coloured the paper dolls. This is my favourite paper doll EVER...I just love these ladies in their beautiful dresses and after applying a coat of clear gesso to the paper dolls to prime the surface, I allowed this to dry and then added colour using Distress Crayons and a waterbrush. If you scribble the crayon onto your glass mat, using it as a colour palette, you can then pick up the colour with your water brush or a paint brush and apply direct to the dolls, building up the intensity and shading as you go along. Of course, you can use any colours you want but I loved this combination and from left to right these are the crayons I used for the dresses...

1st girl: Peeled Paint, Picked Raspberry and Antique Linen with white pen highlights

2nd Girl: Antique Linen, Picked Raspberry

3rd girl: Spun Sugar, Aged Mahogany, Mustard Seed, with white pen highlights

4th girl: Broken China, Stormy Sky, Mustard seed, Peeled Paint

For their faces, I used a touch of Antique Linen and Frayed Burlap with Aged Mahogany on their cheeks.

With my paper doll coloured, I needed something for them to sit on and for this I used the longest size of  Pinked Etcetera Trim which I covered with some scrap paper from the Backdrops 1 set and cut them using the Trims Thinlits Die Set! This is going to be used so much in my house, and if you love the Etcetera Trims, then don't hesitate to buy this die set.

I trimmed the trim slightly to fit inside the frame and attached it with foam pads to add some height.

I then attached the paper dolls to sit on the trim and again used foam pads to support them from behind.

I added a small piece of Mummy Cloth to either side of the trim which I coloured with Kitsch Flamingo and Antique Linen Spray Stain.

Behind the girls, I wanted to add the Sizzix Switchlit Seal. This is genius, not only does it emboss, die cut but it also means you can swap the die, as you have three different designs and it has small magnets to secure the die into place for you to die cut your shapes.

I cut my seal from gold Metallic Kraft stash and then lightly inked the edges with a small amount of Alcohol Ink, Rust and Pitch Black, to add more of a vintage feel.

I then cut a smaller circle to nest inside the seal. I used some Mixed Media card that I inked with Old Paper and Frayed Burlap inks. I matted the circle onto the centre of the seal and then using the Alphanumeric Label die, cut the wording "Summer of 1958' from some more of the gold metallic kraft stash. I adhered my letters into place, added a touch of Walnut Stain Crayon over the top, blending out any harsh lines and then mounted the completed seal onto the background using foam pads.

Underneath the paper dolls, I added a Theories quote. I sanded the edges of the quote before inking it with Walnut Stain Distress Ink and then adhered it in place with Matte Collage Medium.

Now for the 4 flowers across the bottom of the frame. For these I used the Funky Florals 3 die and using the largest flower from the set, I die cut the petals three separate times for each flower plus two separate stamens.

I inked the edges of each of the petals with Spun Sugar Distress Ink and a light touch of Walnut Stain on the tips. I then shaped my flowers with Tim's shaping tools by Sizzix and layered them to create the four separate blooms. Each time I attached the layers, I slightly offset them from the previous one.

To complete the flowers I added a Bauble in the centre which I coloured with Envy Alcohol Pearls.

I attached my flowers along the bottom of the frame using hot glue and then added the leaves which I die cut using a die from the same set and cutting them from Mixed Media Heavystock inked with Peeled Paint and Shabby Shutters Distress Spray Stains. Once the leaves are layered, I attached them amongst the florals.

For the finishing touch, I looped a Stitched Scrap and attached this to the top left hand corner, completing it with a button.

So that's me finished for today and I hope you've loved the piece I've made and also enjoyed seeing the brand new dies that I've used...

...as always, if you make anything, or been inspired by anything that you've seen here on my blog ~ then please, let me know by tagging me on social media or leaving a comment here and I will be right over to take a look!
