Hello there...
It's time for a brand new Simon Says Stamp Monday Challenge to begin and this week our theme is called FRAME IT! Whatever you choose to use, whether it's an actual frame, or you frame your project with mats and layers, we hope you'll join us and play along!
For my project, I embraced the theme and added multiple frames to create a vintage style Vignette Box, using some of my favourite products from across the Tim Holtz products ranges, including Stampers Anonymous stamps on the side of the box, Sizzix trims, and plenty of idea-ology to bring this piece to life.
So, let's get started and here's what I did...
PREPARING THE VIGNETTE BOX
To begin with I prepped the outside of my box and for this I used Speckled Egg Distress Paint. I painted the back and all four sides of the box with the paint, before wiping away any excess with a semi dry baby wipe. This creates a wash over the top of the wood but allows the grain of the natural wood to show through which is the effect I wanted.
On the sides of the box, I added some stamping. This idea was inspired by Tim Holtz's amazing new Advert Panels and I wanted to create one of those panels on the sides of my box and so I used the stamp from the Dapper Stamp Set and stamped the Painters Supplies advert onto both sides of the box using Black Soot Archival Ink.
I finished the sides by adding a border from the Worn Wallpaper Scraps, which I cut to size and attached along the bottom edge.
I gave the ink a quick blast of heat before sealing all the surfaces with a coat of Matte Collage Medium.
Along the top of the box, I adhered a piece of Worn Wallpaper, I used a different design to the one that I will be using on the inside. I cut a panel that fit along the top and adhered it to my box, also applying coat over the top to seal the paper. I then added some Crackle Paste along the two edges. Once the paste was dry and the crackles had appeared, I applied a light coverage of Walnut Stain Distress Crayon over the surface, which I blended out with a waterbrush to accentuate the cracks and also give more of a vintage feel to the paper.
Finally, I added a trim. I cut the trim from watercolour card inked with Speckled Egg Distress Ink and used the Sizzix 3D Impresslits Star Trim Embossing Folder by Tim Holtz which I have in my stash. I then adhered the trim into place and added a Hardware Head to either side.
COVERING THE INSIDE
Moving onto the inside of the box, and for this I used a sheet of Worn Wallpaper. To begin with I cut a panel to fit the back wall of the box and machine stitched a border around the outside edge. I also added a few rips and tears to the paper which I inked with Walnut Stain Distress Ink.
I then covered the sides of the box ~ you might find that you're a little bit short on paper to completely cover every side but I'm going to be adding a faux wall on the back of the box because I didn't want the recess to be so deep, so the lack of paper really doesn't matter and won't show. If you are worried though, you could always use it as an excuse to buy two sets of this gorgeous paper!
After cutting panels to fit each side, I adhered them into place using Matte Collage Medium.
I also covered all the raw edges on the front of the box using very fine strips of the same paper, to create a continual pattern. If you find you haven't got enough, just piece them together like I did, you don't see a join once they're fixed into place.
With the sides of box covered, I added the back panel. I adhered the paper to a piece of mount board and then added double layers of foam pads to the back. I then placed the panel into the back of the box, creating the faux wall.
Down the sides of the faux wall, I tucked some shredded Mummy Cloth into the join between paper and box. The Mummy Cloth is coloured with Frayed Burlap and Antiqued Linen Spray Stains and adhered with Matte Collage Medium.
The box is now ready to decorate and add those frames to the inside.
FRAMES
To begin with I used a Wooden Vignette Frames. These frames come in a pack of four and I used the second smallest.
I painted the frame with Speckled Egg Distress Paint to match the outside of the box, I dried the paint and then applied Walnut Stain Distress Crayon to the edges to make it feel more worn and vintage before I attached the frame onto the inside of my box, using Matte Collage Medium.
For the next frame layer, I used a Curio Frame. I matched the frame size to the aperture of the wooden frame so that it would sit nicely inside the recess and then backed the Curio Frame with an offcut of Backdrops paper that I had on my desk. I also applied some Crackle Paste to the inside of the frame, which I allowed to dry before I used Walnut Stain Distress Crayon to accentuate the crackles.
I attached the Curio Frame over the top of the wooden vignette frame.
I allowed for the frame to dry and set into place before I then attached a flower scrap from the Worn Wallpaper set. I attached this with foam pads and placed it on the left hand side of the frame aperture.
I also added a small Field Notes Snippets Ephemera piece.
To complete the layers, I added the border strip, again taken from the Worn Wallpaper Scraps and once cut down to size, I placed this onto cardboard to add stability and attached it across the bottom of my frame, placing it over the top of the flower scrap.
PAPER DOLL
I colour tinted the paper doll using Distress Crayons, listed below and a waterbrush. I always apply a coat of Clear Gesso over the surface of the doll before adding colour and this helps to seal the paper. For her face and hands, I always use a skin coloured pen that I have in my stash as this creates a beautiful natural look.
Distress Crayon Colours: CHIPPED SAPPHIRE (Dress) ~ PICKED RASPBERRY (Cheeks). GATHERED TWIGS (Boots and Hair). MUSTARD SEED, PEELED PAINT, CRACKLING CAMPFIRE (Flower Basket)
Attach the colour tinted paper doll onto the frame using foam pads and placing her over the top of the Worn Wallpaper flower scrap. I also added a tiny bit more of the shredded Mummy Cloth in and around the arrangement.
BUTTONS
Along the bottom of the box, I filled this with buttons. I threaded each button with cotton thread and then attached them to the box with Matte Collage Medium, placing them so they look as if they've tumbling out to the box.
FINISHING DETAILS
Now for all those little final details...
Next to the little girl, I added a Mini Flair Embellishment ~ the clock face. I punched a hole in the centre of the pin using my Crop-A-Dile and then attached a Clock Hand held in place with a brad. I attached the Mini Flair to the right of my paper doll and also placed a Mini Clip onto the border strip.
Finally, I added some Clippings Stickers ~ Bessie, My Little Girl and used a black pen to outline the edge...
...and attached Metallic Droplets to the corners of the Curio Frame.
So that's my project finished for today and I hope you've enjoyed the step by step of how I made it ~ it was such a fun piece to create.
As always, if you make anything, or been inspired by anything that you've seen here on my blog ~ then please, let me know by tagging me on social media or leaving a comment here and I will be right over to take a look!
