'X' Marks the Spot...

Hello there and welcome to this week's Simon Says Stamp Monday Challenge. The theme for this week is called LAYER IT and the DT are showcasing the one and only, Tim Holtz within their designs! So, if you would like to join us, then all the details are below and we can't wait to see what you create.

From the inked background to the die cut gears, I chose to use plenty of Tim's products on this project, and combined Sizzix, Stampers Anonymous, idea-ology and Ranger Ink to create multiple layers and dimension on my panel. I also will admit that the photo behind the stencil chip, was a happy accident ~ all the products were on my desk, ready to use and I just happened to see the stencil chip over the photo and the lightbulb moment struck and I thought it just looked so cool and would make a great focal point!

So, let's get started and here's how I created my project !

To begin with I cut a panel of Mixed Media Heavystock, 12.5 x 18cm and inspired by one of Tim's inspirational ideas on his recent YouTube live, you can see HERE if you missed it, I used the resist technique with Distress Spray Inks and Distress Paint. I used my brayer to apply Picket Fence Distress Paint to the stamp from the Faded Type stamp set and then stamped the wording directly onto my card panel ~ I stamped this three separate times. I allowed for the paint to dry before spritzing over the top with Distress Spray Stains...
Colours used:
Distress Spray Stains; Frayed Burlap, Weathered Wood, Rusty Hinge, Vintage Photo, Walnut Stain
Oxide Sprays; Speckled Egg, Rusty Hinge
After spraying the inks and getting the effect I wanted, including the resist of the paint, I inked the edges with Walnut Stain Distress Ink.
I then added some more layers of stamping in Barn Door Archival Ink and used the Mini Glitch and the script stamp from The Poinsettia stamp set.
I finished by adding a machine stitched border around the edge.
I now have my base layer and matted this onto gold metallic kraft stash. I wrapped some twine from top to bottom around the card layers and then matted this panel onto a layer of kraft card stock from the Cool set before I attached these layers to a panel of paper from the Backdrops Volume 1 set of papers.

Now to start building those layers and I began by adding some corrugated card. I painted the corrugated card with a layer of Evergreen Bough and Tumbled Glass Distress Paint and once dry, I used the dry brush technique to add a layer of Ground Espresso over the top. You only need a hint of this dark brown, just to accentuate the corrugation. I then tore the corrugated card into small pieces that I adhered to the background, building up the layers that will sit underneath my gears.

For my next layer, I attached a strip of heavystock card inked with the same colours as the background. I wrapped some twine around the centre of the strip, and then used foam pads to adhere this horizontally,. across the centre of my card panel.
Now for the gears and these were cut from mixed media board using the Mechanical Bigz die. Once I'd cut a good selection, I applied some Translucent Grit Paste onto each gear, and allowed for this to dry before I applied black gesso. Once again, let this paint layer dry and then add the subsequent paint colours over the top. Always apply each layer of paint individually, otherwise they'll become muddy in appearance. I used Evergreen Bough, Ground Espresso, Antiqued Bronze and Vintage Photo before finishing with a hint of Alchemy Wax to accentuate the rusty, crusty goodness of the pasted areas.
I arranged the gears to cascade down the card, attaching them over the top of the corrugated card and the central strip.

Now for the main focal point, and that happy accident...

Taking the letter 'X' stencil chip, I added some Translucent Grit Paste to the edges of the chip and once dry, I dabbed the entire chip with the Embossing Dabber before I sprinkled Walnut Stain Distress Glaze over the top. I removed some of the glaze from random areas, so that the gold showed through and then heat embossed the glaze until molten.

Where I applied the paste, I applied another layer of Distress Glaze, this time Rusty Hinge and this gave me the rusty look I wanted to the edges.
Behind the 'x', I placed a Vintage Photobooth image and just allowed for the cherubic face of this cute little boy to show through the letter. At this stage, if you have a precious photo of a loved one, then you could easily swap out the photo I used and place one of your own behind the 'x' and make it a personal gift.

After stitching down the sides of the chip, I matted and layered it onto blackout kraft stash, followed by a layer of gold metallic kraft card, I adhered the chip to a piece of Mica from my own stash, which I set at an angle before I then attached the arrangement over the top of the gears.
For the wording across the bottom of the chip, I used the 'love heartbeat' from Tim's Heartbeat Thinlits Die set by Sizzix and cut four separate pieces which I layered together to form one die cut the thickness of chipboard.
I then painted the wording, 'love' using Candied Apple Distress Paint and the heartbeat in Evergreen Bough. To add glaze over the top of the line, I used Tim's Embossing Pens, applying the pen over the top of each of the colours in turn. I then added Fired Brick Embossing Glaze over the wording, and Speckled Egg over the line before heat embossing.
I attached the heartbeat die cut across the bottom section of the stencil chip.
We're nearly there and all that's left is the details...

I added an adornment star, painted with Candied Apple Distress Paint onto the left hand side of the central strip, together with a Hinge Clip that I altered with Evergreen Bough, Ground Espresso and Antique Bronze Distress Paints.
The Hardware Heads in each corner are altered with a little Rust and Pitch Black Alcohol Ink and I then complete the card with some Machinery heads in the centres of the gears, again altered with the same colours of alcohol inks.

Finally, I added the Clippings Sticker, 'within my heart' and placed this just below the gear arrangement as the finishing detail!
So, that completes my project for this week and I hope you've loved what I've made and been inspired by some of the ideas.

Don't forget that every week, one lucky random participant has the chance to win a $25 gift voucher from Simon Says Stamp and you can join in up to 5 times, which means you could have 5 chances to winYou have until Monday 8am Ohio time. 1pm UK time, 2 pm CET to join in and good luck....
