Simon Says Stamp Monday Challenge ~ Winged Things

Hello everyone...

Hope you've had a wonderful weekend and ready for the start of a new week. Of course, as always on a Monday, it means the start of a brand new challenge over on the Simon Says Stamp Monday Challenge blog and this challenge is called WINGED THINGS and was suggested by my lovely friend and team member Tracy. So, what will you create for our theme? Will you add fairy wings to something? Use a favourite bird stamp? Create a tag featuring a spring theme? There are so many possibilities and we can't wait to see what you will make.

For my piece this week, I was inspired by the lyrics to the wonderful song, Come Fly With Me. When I was little, my Dad used to play this all the time, it was one of his favourite albums, and songs and I think the Sinatra magic must've rubbed off onto me too as now, this has become one of my favourites too.

So, without further ado ~ here's how I made this wallhanging...influenced by a song.
To begin with I cut a piece of corrugated card to size, making it slightly larger than a size 8 tag. I then tore away some of the surface of card to reveal the corrugation and applied a layer of gesso over the top. I then took my size 8 manila tag and a size 5 tag and swooshed it through some Tumbled Glass, Salty Ocean and Antique Linen Distress Stains that I applied to my craft sheet to pick up the colour of the stains. Once I dried the tag, I then added some layers of ink by spritzing it through the Honeycomb layering stencil using a Tumbled Glass Marker Pen in the Tim Holtz spritzer. To complete the background of the tag, I added some white paint using a lid of the Distress Paints, inked the edges with Walnut Stain Distress Ink and added some tissue tape. Finally, I stamped the wording from the Bird Feather stamp set down the left hand side.
Next, I used the Cardinal die from Sizzix and die cut the image from Grungeboard. I then slightly adapted the bird, by snipping into it to create a different shaped head and I added a wing. I then painted the bird and the branch using Distress Paints. I used the Tattered Flower Garland die to create my small dimensional blossoms, which are coloured using Picked Raspberry Distress Ink and added these to the branches together with leaves from the die, popping small pearls into the centres of each flower.

I attached the bird and branch onto my tag, then used Chit Chat stickers to create the lyrics and added an Idea-ology arrow. I mounted the tag onto my corrugated background, leaving a small space on the right hand side, which is where the surprise element will be later added.
To complete the tag, I used the Pediments die to die cut chipboard, painted with Distress Paints and added to the top, together with a Light Bulb.
The next stage is to make that surprise, fun little element and for this, you will need to use the inked size 5 tag and with the tag placed horizontal, just tear away the edge of it. Ink the edges and then stamp that wonderful quote from Tim Holtz onto it.
I then dyed crinkle ribbon using the Tumbled Glass and Antique Linen stains and die cut some gorgeous feathers, again inked in the same colours as the ribbon and attached these to the centre of the bow.

Finally, my little birdie needed a friend to fly away with...so, for this I used the Mini Birdcage and Bird die and die cut some chipboard. I painted the birdcage silver using an Adirondack Paint Dabber, then embossed it with clear powder to give a molten metal finish. I coloured the small bird with Distress Paints and then attached it to the cage.
I then attached the whole cage using a swivel clip to my bow, to create this gorgeous little charm to hang down.
Last but not least, I added Hinge Clips, which I coloured using Treasure Gold to my corrugated card and then threaded through some wire to act as a hanger.
So, I really hope you've loved what I've shared today and for more great ideas and inspiration, then you need to look no further than the blog to see all the wonderful creations from my very talented Design Team members and every week, one lucky random participant has the chance to win a $50 gift voucher from Simon Says Stamp.
