Happy In Her Heart...

Hello friends...

Hope you've all had a good week and the sun has shone wherever you are! As the new week begins, it's time for the brand new Simon Says Stamp Monday Challenge and this week our theme is all about Mixed Media! The DT are also showcasing Dina Wakley products within their projects, something that you don't necessarily have to do to play along with us but if you are a fan, then this is your chance to put those amazing products to great use!

For my project, I was inspired by my Grandmother Ethel ~ she was such a wonderful woman, anyone who knew her, loved her and I have so many fond memories of the time we spent together. But the one thing I will always remember is her beautiful garden, which was the pride and joy of both my grandparents and I spent many happy summer holidays playing in that garden, which is why I chose to create this page....

....and with this in mind, I used Dina's Media Journal for my vintage style layout and combined Dina's products with a few of Tim Holtz's, including a vintage photo, Distress Paint, collage paper and some ephemera pieces.

So let's get started ~ it's time for this week's challenge!

To begin with I cut a strip of the Botanical Collage Paper and flipped it over so that the printed side is facing down. You'll probably have seen Tim demo the next stage where you use Distress Paints to paint on the reverse of the tissue paper to add colour to the images and if you want to check it out again, then click HERE

The colours I chose to use on my flowers were a combination of Picked Raspberry, Crackling Campfire, Tumbled Glass, Peeled Paint and Candied Apple and below are close ups of each of the individual painted images once I've adhered them onto the pages of the layout.

When the paint has thoroughly dried on the reverse of the collage tissue, I flipped it back over to the right side and used a water brush to apply a very narrow line of water around the areas that I wanted to remove and use on my pages. By doing this it will create a much smoother outline to your image when you finally adhere it onto the page. Also, if you choose, you could use the whole sheet if you want to, but I just wanted certain placement flowers to pop off the page. Set these to one side whilst moving onto the next stage...

With the journal open in front of me, the watercolour paper on the left hand side, the canvas page on the right, I began to prep my pages. I wanted to create several layers of different textures to this layout...so, I began by cutting the left hand watercolour page in half, which then revealed the burlap page underneath. To create the next layer, I cut the burlap so that it was slightly wider than the watercolour paper and would show underneath.

These cuts mean that I now have three separate, layered pages on the left hand side that overlap one another.

Now to adhere the painted Collage Paper flowers and leaves.

I used Matte Collage Medium and applied this with the Distress Collage Brush before carefully adhering each of the tissue flowers and leaves into place. You can see that I arranged these to run along the bottom of both pages.

I also added one flower to come in from the central spine of the journal and added the fern leaves in the corner of the left hand page.

Down the spine of the journal, I added some strips of Design Tape. I randomly tore these strips and layered them side by side across both pages. I then scraped some gesso over the top of the tape strips, allowed for this to dry and added some Walnut Stain Distress Crayon over the top, blending out the harsh lines with my finger.

I finished the pages with a splatter of Black Soot Distress Paint, allowing the splatters to fall across all the sections.

Before I move onto the photo, there is one last layer to create and this is the crochet embellishment down the left hand side. for this I used the Sizzix Crochet Thinlits die to cut Mixed Media Heavystock card and after inking the crochet strip with Antique Linen and Frayed Burlap Distress Inks, I attached the strip to the burlap page, using Matte Collage Medium. I then attached my watercolour page over the top, sandwiching the crochet die cut between the layers and just allowed for the pages to dry thoroughly....

...and whilst that's doing it's thing, I moved onto the photo.

The photo of this beautiful lady taken from Tim Holtz's Found Relatives Photos is going to be the centre piece, I have so much love for this photo ~ she is gorgeous and reminds me of my Grandma Ethel, which is why I've added the name in the top left of the photo, using Clippings Stickers and outlining the stickers with a black pen.

I used this image as the main focal point and after applying a coat of Dina's clear gesso over the image, allowing for this to dry ~ I then colour tinted the image with Distress Crayons and a water brush.

Colours used: Picked Raspberry, Peeled Paint, Spun Sugar, Gathered Twigs, Broken China, and Faded Jeans

I creased the corners and edges of the photo to create more of a vintage feel and then added some stitching around the edges.

I mounted my photo onto a piece of linen that I have in my stash. For this layout I wanted a very natural, organic look to the overall project and cut the linen to create raggedy edges, nothing too uniform or straight edged.

I then added some machine stitching to the linen...

...before I attached the photograph in the centre.

Now to mount the photo onto my journal page and if you're really clever I'm sure that you can hand stitch this onto the page, attach it with fabric glue or some other sort of fusible bonding but because I don't have any of those things to hand I have actually pinned the panel using safety pins and decorative pearl headed pins.

This actually holds everything in place, and I even overlapped the corners of the photo with the pins so that is also really secure and doesn't lift.

I placed the photo in the centre of the linen canvas page, arranging it to sit in the centre of the flowers in the top left and right hand corners.

I completed this section by adding some ephermera pieces from the Field Notes Ephemera set, that I tucked underneath and around the photo and also added a Salvaged Tag, slightly scrunched for more of a vintage feel and inked with Walnut Stain Distress Ink. I also threaded some twine through the hole, leaving this to hang down loosely.

Finally, I threaded some buttons with cotton and attached these to my layout with Matte Collage Medium.

To complete this page, I stitched a Stitched Scrap to the top right hand corner...

So, that's my journal layout complete and I hope you've enjoyed the process of how I created these pages, all inspired by a very special lady!

2: Happy Together...

Hello friends and happy Monday...

I can't quite believe that we're already in March!! Where did January and February go?!? It's crazy how time flies in lockdown but at least there has been some light at the end of this long road and this week, I'll be having my Covid vaccination.

But before then, it's time for the brand new Simon Says Stamp Monday Challenge and this week our theme is Art Journaling! The DT are showcasing Dyan Reaveley products within their projects, which is something you can do but it's not essential ~ you can join in whatever product you choose to use!

For my project, I used Dyan's Small Creative Journal to create a collaged, layered vintage journal layout using Tim Holtz ephemera. I love to create this style of art journaling, it's also a fabulous way of using up my offcuts and scraps of paper that sit in a box for "one of those days".  I also chose to use a photo from the Tim Holtz Found Relative photo set, but there's no reason as to why you can't use a precious photo from your own collection and create a page that is all about family!

So, let's get started and here's how I created my journal layout..

I started my layout by using a few of my scraps and offcuts of paper from the Abandoned Paper Stash and adhered these down the centre of the double pages, together with some strips of Tim's Remant Design Tape using Matte Collage Medium, which I also used to seal the papers. I then applied some Crackle Paste, around the paper edges and left this to do it's thing whilst I colour tinted my photo.

The photo that I used is from Tim's Found Relatives set and I just adore this photo of mother and child, it's so beautiful. To add colour to the image, I applied a coat of clear gesso to prime the surface and then used a damp fine detail water brush and Distress Crayons and basically watercolored the photo.

After adding some machine stitching around the edges, it was time to go back to my journal, where the crackle paste was now dry and crackly, and complete the background.

I used the Pumice Stone and Walnut Stain Distress Crayons to add a touch of vintage to the background and to accentuate the crackles that the paste has given. To blend the crayons and get rid of any harsh lines, I used a water brush and a semi dry baby wipe, and just applied this over the surface.

I completed the background by flicking a small amount of watered down Black Soot Distress Paint across the pages and allowed for everything to dry thoroughly and I also added some machine stitching. It wasn't the easiest of things to do...the book and my machine had a few hissy fits but I got there in the end and obtained the look I wanted.

Moving on, I gathered my supplies and used flowers, labels and a butterfly in flight, all taken from the Field Notes Ephemera and Snippets Ephemera sets. Once I had the ones I wanted to use, I arranged these, together with my photo onto my pages, adhering them directly onto the background using Matte Collage Medium.

I completed the arrangement with a tiny butterfly in flight, that I added to the top right hand corner of the photo and a vial label that I layered, buy placing it just underneath the photo.

I then added a small button, with pink thread stitched through the holes and a postmark that comes from the Specimen Remnant Rubs pack.

For the finishing touches to this layout, I added the large number 2 which is from the Urban Layers pack and adhered this to the left hand page. I then used one of the new products from Tim's idea-ology range, Metallic Stickers and I took the "Happy Together" sticker and placed this underneath my large number.

Finally, I added a Stitched Scrap in the top left hand corner, complete with a mini pin...

...and that is my journal layout complete and I hope you've enjoyed the walk through the process of how it was created.

As always, if you've been inspired by anything that you see here on my blog, please just tag me on my social media or leave a message so I can pop by to take a look ~ I always love to see your work!

Life Is Wonderful ~ Dream Big

Hello friends and happy Monday!

Hope you've all had a wonderful weekend and if you're anything like me, I'm sure you've been watching everything and anything that has been posted about Creativation over the last few days, especially all the wonderful new Tim Holtz products that have been released! I have so much love for these and I can't wait to share all the projects that I've made over the coming weeks, it's going to be a very busy blog!

But back to today and this week's SSS Monday Challenge, which is all about Home Decor! Those who follow my blog on a regular basis will know by now that I love making these types of projects, so with the theme in mind, I created a piece that is all about childhood, dreams and friendship and hope you love the vintage theme that I've incorporated into this Vignette divided drawer, packed full of Tim Holtz products.
So, let's get started...the new challenge is about to begin!

To begin with I started with the Divided Drawer, removing one of the shelves and began by covering the inside using papers from the Memoranda Paper Stash. I usually cut all my panels to size and then adhered them into place with Matte Collage Medium, also applying a coat of the medium over the top to seal the paper.
Moving onto the outside of the box and I wanted to add texture, and a decorative element but I didn't want to add too much colour, I just wanted something soft and vintage.
So to achieve this, I used the gorgeous new Bouquet Thinlits die from Sizzix and cut two panels from Mixed Media Heavystock Card. I then cut each panel into strips that would cover the width on the sides of the drawer. I adhered the panels of die cut card directly onto the box using Matte Collage Medium and allowed to dry.
You can see how pretty the effect is and how it creates the texture but still retains a beautiful vintage softness about it.
For the top of the box, I took the shelf that I removed from inside and attached this to the top. I then attached a further panel of die cut card to fit.
Once the medium was dry, I applied a dry brush of white gesso, mixed with Antique Linen Distress Paint and applied this over the entire box, including the back, before once again allowing to dry and then applying a very light layer of Vintage Collage Medium.

Once the medium is dry, I then applied some Crackle Paste, adding it to the edges, the corners and down the joins of the box on the inside and the outside. Allow for the paste to dry, (I know there's a lot of drying time on this piece but it's worth it and some of the techniques can be speeded up by using a heat gun) before applying the Walnut Stain Distress Crayon directly onto the crackles, along the edges of the box and on the inside of the box ~ blending the colour in with a damp water brush. This will accentuate the crackle effect but not add too much colour.
The box is now ready to decorate and I began with the photo. This was taken from Tim's Found Relatives set and I colour tinted it with Distress Crayons. I then aged it around the edges using a light touch of Vintage Collage Medium, smeared onto the photo with my finger before matting the image onto a panel of silver metallic kraft stash, followed by a piece of chipboard, that I cut slightly larger than the matted photo and painted with black Soot Distress Paint.
I mounted the photo using foam pads onto the inside of my box and added a clippings sticker ~ 'life is wonderful".
Beneath the photo, I arranged a cluster of trinkets ~ a corked vial, that had Collage Medium smeared over the bottle to create an opaque look to the glass and then I filled with Bauble Adornments, coloured with Alcohol Ink. I then took a couple of old paintbrushes and popped them into the corked vial, together with a piece of Mummy Cloth and some twine tied around the bottle neck, complete with a Tiny Pin attached to the knot.
I then added a thimble which had a vintage touch applied using Distress Paints ~ Evergreen Bough, Antiqued Bronze, Rusty Hinge and Black Soot. I took a bunch of the Bouquet Findings and spritzed them with Milled Lavender Spray Stain. Once they were dry, I cut them down to size, so that they would form a posy and attached them to the inside of my thimble with Matte Collage Medium. I then added Platinum Stickles Glitter Glue to each centre of each flower.
Attach each of the pieces, together with a ruler that I took from the Junk Drawer Baseboard set, (if you haven't seen these yet, you need these in your life and they are available on pre-order, together with the Tiny Clip, that I've attached to the ruler) and then as a finishing touch, I added the cute little dog charm...
Moving onto the bottom section of the drawer...
...and for this I started by adhering a floral ephemera piece from the Keepsakes Ephemera set and adhered this to the back of the box with Collage Medium. Whilst this is drying, I attached a screw eye from the Vignette Hardware set that I screwed underneath the shelf to hang my watch from. I then took my small sized pocket watch, 'vintaged it up' with Distress Paints, placed a clock face inside which is from the Snippets Ephemera set and added a clock hand, attached with a brad to the centre. I attached a chain to the watch and then hung it from the screw eye fastener.
The other trinkets that I used and added to the bottom section of the drawer, include:
...three Alpha Dice, stacked up and placed next to the pocket watch, some alcohol inked Bauble Findings and another corked vial, crackled with Rock Candy Crackle Paint and inked with Mushroom Alcohol Ink and this, contains tiny buttons inside. I then wrapped some twine around the bottle neck, attached a story stick and a floral adornment which was inked with Rose Gold Metallic Alcohol Ink.
The final trinket was taken from the Snippets Ephemera set and these are the postcards, that I tied together with some fine twine and then placed into the box.
So, the box is nearly ready and all that I need to do is add the finishing touches ~ the handle/mini hardware pull which sits on the top, complete with Hardware Heads and which has also been given the vintage touch using Distress Paints....
...and then we have the quote chip, attached to the shelf. This quote chip is from the brand new set called Theories and all I did was sand the edges, apply a smear of Vintage Collage Medium over the top and then attach to the shelf, adding two Hardware Heads to either side.
I hope you've loved this project and of course, I hope it's inspired you to create some home decor pieces of your own and you can use Tim's products like I have or if you want to create something more personal, maybe use a precious photo of a family member and arrange trinkets around it that hold cherished memories. The ideas are endless but they really do make wonderful pieces to display around the home...

Don't forget, if you would like to see more inspiration from my talented teamies over on the challenge blog and every week, one lucky random participant has the chance to win a $50 gift voucher from Simon Says Stamp and you can join in up to 5 times, which means you could have 5 chances to winYou have until Monday 8am Ohio time. 1pm UK time, 2 pm CET to join in and good luck....

Thank you so much for taking the time to stop by today and hope to see you again soon, love Emma xxx
