Here Comes Summer...

Hello friends...

Hope you all had a wonderful weekend, and Happy Monday! As always, the start of a brand new week means that we have a brand new Simon Says Stamp Monday Challenge and this week, our theme is all about VACATION and however you choose to interpret this challenge, we hope you'll join us and play along!

For my make, I chose to create a vintage style tag all about friendship, sea and sand and was inspired by a photo from Tim Holtz's Snapshots pack and I just thought it incapsulated everything about going on vacation and creating wonderful, happy memories that can be treasured for many years to come.

So, it's time to fasten your seatbelts, we're going on vacation and here's how I created this project....

For this make, I used a Mini Etcetera Tag as my base...

COVERING THE TAG SURFACE

I began by applying Design Tape around the edge of my tag before cutting a panel of paper from the Backdrops Vol 2 that measures the same size as the tag itself, and then inked the edges with Walnut Stain Distress Ink.

I then ripped and tore the edges of the paper, scrunching up the corners to create folds before I machine stitched a border around the edge.

I adhered the paper in place using Matte Collage Medium, applying a coat of the medium over the surface to seal the paper.

I then ran the Walnut Stain Distress Crayon around the edges to add the 'oldy worldy' vintage finish to this piece.

To complete the tag, I applied some crackle paste to the hole reinforcer piece and once the paste was dry, I accentuated the crackle with Walnut Stain Distress Crayon, and then fixed it into position.

The final detail was to add some script to the top left hand corner and I used a torn piece of Photographic Collage Paper, and just adhered it into position using Matte Collage Medium before I threaded some rope through the hole itself.

EMBOSSED PANEL

For the next layer, I used the Swirls Embossing Folder to emboss a panel of Mixed Media Heavystock card. I always spritz the card with a light mist of water before running it through the machine as this will break down the fibres of the paper causing less cracking to the surface.

Once embossed, I added the colour and used the following Distress Spray Stains and Oxide Sprays:

Spray Stains: Bundled Sage, Tumbled Glass, Evergreen Bough, Faded Jeans

Oxide Sprays: Speckled Egg

I spritzed the cardstock with the sprays before adding a mist of water to blend them and create the colours of the ocean.

I cut the panel down to size to fit onto my tag, and mounted it onto burlap before attaching it to the tag using foam pads and then added a Remnant Rub from the Labeled set, placing it in the top left hand corner.

PAPER ROLLS

Now to start bringing the scene to life and we'll begin with the paper rolls.

These rolls are various lengths and are all made using offcuts of papers from the Backdrops Packs and I just selected a few that would be the perfect colour match.

I took each piece of paper, and tightly rolled them around a pencil, securing them with a line of red line tape to hold them in position. I ripped and distressed the ends of each paper roll, before I applied some crackle paste to add texture. Once the paste was dry, I just ran the Hickory Smoke Distress Crayon over the surface, blending out the medium with a damp brush.

I then placed each roll side by side, attaching them with Matte Collage Medium before wrapping string around either side.

I attached the rolls across the embossed panel on my tag.

PHOTO

There was never a doubt which photo I would use for this make, I just love this one but wanted to create more of a vintage vibe. So to do this, I began by applying a coat of Matte Collage Medium over the surface to seal the photo and then cut the edges using Tim's Deckle Edge paper trimmer. I then added small tears before inking the edges with Walnut Stain Distress Ink.

The photo itself was colour tinted using Distress Crayons, applied directly to the image with a waterbrush.

Once I was happy, I mounted the photo onto some mountboard to create more stability before I added a small Remnant Rub, 'Jul 9', in the bottom right hand corner. I attached the photo over a piece of Mica Tile and then adhered it over the top of the paper rolls and added a Tiny Clip to the top left hand corner.

FLOWERS AND FOLIAGE

For the flowers, I used a selection of Floral Adornments and to create the enamelled effect, I applied the Embossing Dabber to each flower and then sprinkled Distress Glazes over the top to add the colour. I used Kitsch Flamingo for the larger flowers and Fossilized Amber for the smaller ones and heat embossed each piece until the glaze became molten and shiny.

Be careful when heat embossing metal as it will become very hot!

I layered the smaller flowers in the centres of the large ones and then added a pearl to each before setting them to one side so the adhesive would set.

The leaves and foliage are all cut from Mixed Media Heavystock card using dies from the Large Funky Florals dies set. The card panels are coloured with Rustic Wilderness and Peeled Paint Spray Stains, and once dry, I cut each leaf before blending Forest Moss around the edges. I shaped each leaf and then arranged them together with the flowers, placing them onto the paper rolls and around the photo.

To add some more texture, I placed curly moss into the arrangement. This moss is from my stash but can be bought from many craft stores.

To complete this arrangement, I added a small ephemera piece underneath the photo and then placed a Mini Flair Pin, '54' onto the right hand side.

FINISHING DETAILS

Underneath the photo arrangement, I added a quote. I place a quote chip label inside a label frame and attached it over the top of a ruler ephemera piece, taken from the Memoir Ephemera set.

Finally, I attached a Hook Clasp complete with a Thought Token to the left hand side of the tag by looping the chain around the tag and attaching the ring fastener through the chain to secure it into position.

The thought token is coloured with Black Soot, Antiqued Bronze, Ground Espresso, Crackling Campfire Distress Paints and then I applied Picket Fence Distress Crayon to accentuate the wording.

Grateful...

Hello friends...

Hope you've all had a wonderful weekend and you're ready for another week of inspiration on the Simon Says Stamp Monday Challenge Blog. This week our challenge theme is; THANKS/THANKSGIVING and we would love for you to join us and play along.

With Thanksgiving just around the corner, I chose to not to go down the traditional route of the occasion but to create a card that is from the heart, a make to show how grateful I am for all the people that I have in my life, my family, my friends, and of course, everyone who visits my blog and social media profiles ~ you are all truly appreciated and I'm so very grateful for you all!

So let's get started, and I hope you enjoy how I created this card...

BASE LAYERS

To begin with I made a card blank from brown cardstock measuring 13.5 x 18.5cm.

For the base layers of this card, I used a piece of plain white card, and added one of the tape designs from the Butterfly Design Tape set around each of the four sides. I then machine stitched a border around the outside edge and matted the tape trim layer onto silver metallic kraft card before mounting it onto my card blank. My base layer is ready...

Now we move onto the next layer and the embossed background for my hearts.

For this I used the Tree Rings 3D Texture Fade, which is one of the new Christmas releases from Tim Holtz and Sizzix. I embossed a piece of Heavystock Kraft card and then inked the raised areas with Ground Espresso and Gathered Twigs to accentuate the embossing.

To form the gnarly edges around the panel, I used Crackle Paste which I applied with a palette knife. I allowed the paste to dry and the crackles to appear before lightly rubbing Gathered Twigs Distress Crayon over the top, blending the colour with a semi damp baby wipe, or you can use a damp finger.

I matted the embossed panel onto a piece of silver metallic kraft stash, followed by black kraft stash, both of which are sanded around the edges to create more of a rustic feel to the card.

HEARTS and ARROW

I used the Sizzix Lovestruck Colorize die by Tim Holtz to create my two hearts which form the focal point of this card.

To begin with I coloured my cardstock using the beautiful new colour member to the Distress family, Lumberjack Plaid.

I sprayed Distress Spray Stain onto four panels of cardstock, controlling the amount and applying various amounts of colour to each panel. This will create the shading needed to build your die cuts.

I then used the shades of Lumberjack Plaid coloured card and cut each piece to make the two hearts. Cut the small highlights that are layered over the tops of each heart from cream card, and ink each die cut piece around the edges with Antique Linen Distress Ink.

I inked the edges of each die cut piece using a combination of the Lumberjack Plaid, Black Soot Distress Ink and Walnut Stain Distress Ink, using less ink on each layer.

With all the dies cuts in front of me, I layered each piece over the top of the previous one to form my two hearts and finally added the cream coloured highlights on top.

Set the hearts to one side and moving onto the arrow. I cut the main piece, the shaft from black card, the arrow head from gold metallic card...

...and the feathery end, (there is a technical term for that section but it's easier to call it a feather, lol) from bronze metallic cardstock.

I assembled the arrow pieces and then attached them to my hearts, aligning them so that they look as if they're pierced through each one.

I attached the hearts and arrow to the card front, using foam pads and you can see the dimension this creates in the photo below.

WORD PLAQUE

Now for the wording plaque that sits beneath the hearts and for this I wanted to create a plaque that would look like tarnished metal.

I began by cutting the letters using the Sizzix Alphanumeric Bold Thinlits Dies from Tim Holtz. I cut one layer from silver metallic kraft card, and three layers from black card. I then layered each letter to form thicker letters that once attached, would stand proud from the plaque, finishing with the metallic one on top.

Attach the letters to a strip of gold metallic kraft stash and then I used Distress Paints to add the tarnish. I used a combination of Burnt Sienna Alchemy Paint from Prima and Black Soot Distress Paint.

Apply the paint in two separate layers, drying in between each and then before drying the finishing layer, I lightly wiped away the paint from the lettering. You will get some residue left, you don't want to wipe away all the paint.

Matt the plaque onto silver metallic kraft card, followed by a layer of the brown cardstock, each time leaving a border around the outside, and then using foam pads, I attached the plaque to my card.

HARDWARE HEADS

Finally, I painted six hardware heads with Lumberjack Plaid Distress Paint and once dry, I attached them to the corners of my card.

So, that's my card finished for this week's challenge. This Is Halloween...

Hello friends...

Can you believe we're nearly in October?!? It's definitely been a busy year of making and time has flown but as always, I'm having so much fun creating new and exciting projects and can't wait to share what is coming soon!

In the meantime, it's Monday and that means it's time for the brand new Simon Says Stamp Monday Challenge and this week our theme is all about EMBOSSING! We want you to create projects and emboss it, anyway you choose ~ whether that be with powders and folders, as I've done with my project, or anything else you choose, the choice is entirely up to you and we can't wait to see how you interpret the challenge.

For my make, I created a spooky little tag and combined the folder to create a background with powders that bring a shimmer and shine to the autumn leaves.

So let's get started, and I hope you enjoy the process of how I created this project.

I used a Mini Etcetera Tag as my base and then started work on creating that background.

TAG BACKGROUND

I cut a panel of mixed media heavy stock card, that was the same size as my tag and spritzed it with a combination of Black Soot Distress Spray Stain and Wicked Elixir Mica Stain, I don't usually got for green but I love this colour so much and it works so well for Halloween projects, and I'm really embracing it this year! "Green is my new blue in this craft room"...

After misting the sprays with a little water to get a good blend, I then splattered some Burning Ember Mica Stain over the top before drying it thoroughly.

The card is slightly larger in size than the folder I'm using, so you will need to emboss this in two passes and to begin, I placed the top section of the card inside the Sizzix Acorns 3D Texture Fade Embossing folder from Tim Holtz. Run it through your die cutting machine, I did this a couple of times for a deep impression and then remove the card, and place the bottom section of the card in the folder to emboss this.

You will get a line across the middle of the card, but don't worry as this will be hidden.

To complete the background and add some definition to the embossing, I rubbed a small amount of Foundry Wax over the top. I used a blend of all four colours which gave me the effect I wanted but you can use any colour you choose.

After heat setting the wax, I added a machine stitched border around the outside of the background before adhering it to the tag using Matte Collage Medium.

Across the centre of the tag, where you have that straight line I mentioned earlier, I hid this with a strip fo metallic kraft card that I embossed using the Circuit 3D Texture Fade. I cut the strip to approx, 3cm in width and one by one, I applied a combination of Black Soot, Ground Espresso and Antiqued Bronze Distress Paints over the top. I wipe away the excess paint each time and then always dry between each paint application as you don't want the colour to become muddy in appearance.

I attached the strip across the tag using foam pads and then on either side of the strip, I hammered in a Tack Nail that I altered with Distress Paint for the rusty finish.

LEAVES

Now to create those leaves and once again, I used Mixed Media Heavystock Card and spritzed the card with the following stains and a mist of water:

Vintage Photo, Crackling Campfire, Barn Door, Antique Linen, Peeled Paint, Speckled Egg

Once I'd achieved the colour I wanted, I then cut my leaves using Tim's Leaf Print Thinlits Die Set from Sizzix and cut the leaves. This die cuts the leaves in two sections, so they can be layered over the top of one another ~ you get the solid leaf shape and the skeleton leaf that layers over the top.

With all my pieces cut, I took the skeleton part of the leaf and embossed them with a combination of Distress Glazes and a hint of gold embossing powder.

Distress Glaze in order of application: Crackling Campfire, Vintage Photo, Candied Apple, Walnut Stain

Apply the embossing dabber to the skeleton left and sprinkle with the powder, using one powder at a time and heating in between each application. I always add less of each colour as I go along, so it gives a variation of colour to the embossed areas. Layer the finished embossed leaves over the top of the solid leaf and ink the edges with Walnut Stain Distress Ink.

Because I had a few extra leaves already cut and sitting on my desk, I used a combination of these leaves with some of the previously cut leaves that I had leftover and cut using the Oak Leaf Impresslit Die.

PAPER DOLL AND TARGET

For the main focal point of this tag, I used a Halloween Paper Doll, which I layered over the top of a Bat Wing Transparency to add a little extra spookiness!

I colour tinted the paper doll using Distress Watercolour Pencils. Picking up the pigment direct from the pencil using a water brush and applying it to the surface.

Once dry, I then threaded some silver metallic thread through a needle and popped the thread through the hand of the paper doll before I tied a spider from the Halloween adornments pack, to the end of the thread.

The spider is painted with Black Soot Distress Paint and Candied Apple in the centre of it's body.

In his other hand, I placed a snippet piece. I inked the little Curator Snippets ephemera piece and crumpled it up slightly before I cut a small incision into the hand of the paper doll, and placed the letter underneath it, so he appears to be holding it.

I mounted the paper doll onto the target, which is from the Halloween Baseboards Pack and then used foam pads to add dimension on the back of the target before I arranged it in the centre of the die cut leaves, which I attached around the circle.

I added some Spanish Moss in and around the leaves to add some more texture before moving onto the next step.

FOR SKILL AND AMUSEMENT ONLY

This was the perfect caption for this piece and once again, it's from the halloween Baseboards pack. I sanded the edges and then inked them before I mounted them onto my tag using foam pads to add some height.

I attached some moss along the top of the baseboard piece to complete this section....

...and made sure it looked as if the little boy was standing on the moss and quote.

We're nearly there and all that's left is to add the hardware...

...a few bolts on each of the four corners and finally a hinge clip to the top of the tag. I altered the metal with a little Black Soot and Crackling Campfire Distress Paint to create a more rusty finish.
