Under My Umbrella...

Happy Easter Monday friends...

Hope you've all been visited by the Easter Bunny and you're all having a restful holiday! It doesn't seem a minute since we were celebrating Christmas, so to think we're already midway through April is crazy but as the weeks fly by, it's time to begin the new Simon Says Stamp Monday Challenge and this week, our theme is called ~ WHATEVER THE WEATHER!

For my make, I was inspired by my love of umbrellas ~ I just love them and can never resist the opportunity to use one in a make! So with this in mind, I created an Etcetera Tag that is all about childhood friends and used plenty of Tim Holtz products which included some of the new Collage Tiles and Flashcards and a group paper doll which I combined with a Sizzix umbrella die from The Gent Thinlits Die Set and chose the quote that whatever the weather, these three girls were always perfectly happy together!

So let's get started, it's time to get creative!

To begin with I used a Mini Etcetera Tag and after arranging some of the Collage Tiles, I adhered them into place using Matte Collage Medium which I also applied over the top to seal the paper.

Over some of the joins of the Collage Tiles, I added some Design Tape Trims ~ I used the ruler trim in the pack. I also added a Snippets Number Strip, just adhering it in the top left corner.

Once dry, I then ran my Walnut Stain Distress Crayon over the top of all the joins, and blended out the colour with my fingertip before flicking Picket Fence Distress Paint over the surface using a splatter brush.

We now how the base surface ready to decorate....

...and we'll start with the ledge that the paper dolls are standing on.

For this I used a Ruler piece, and broke one end of the ruler by snapping it away.

I then added some Sterling Foundry Wax to the ruler piece, just letting the wax touch random areas of the wood. After I heat set the wax, I rubbed a Walnut Stain Distress Ink Pad directly over the surface, before using a semi dry baby wipe to remove the excess. I then sanded the wood lightly, and mounted it onto my tag using foam pads.

Underneath the ruler piece, I added Hardware Heads.

Now for creating my little scene and I began with the umbrella...

UMBRELLA

As I mentioned, I used the umbrella from The Gent Thinlits Die Set to die cut Mixed Media Heavystock card. There are three die cut sections for the umbrella, including the handle which you won't need for the project.

I then laid out my solid umbrella shape and the fine detail outline layer in front of me and painted the umbrella with Candied Apple Distress Paint. Heat dry the paint and then dry brush over the top with Black Soot Distress Paint. I also painted the long handle in black. By dry brushing over the red, it will create more of a vintage feel and tone down the brightness.

I wanted to create a metallic look to the long handled and the fine detail layer and for this I used Sterling Foundry Wax, which I applied over the surface. Heat set the wax layer and then adhere to the main umbrella die cut using collage medium.

To add a little more depth, and a slight sparkle to my umbrella, I used Frosted Crystal and Gilded Foundry Wax.

To do this I dabbed an Embossing Dabber very lightly over the surface of the umbrella and then sprinkled Frosted Crystal over the top. If you feel the crystal layer is too heavy, just take a paint brush and remove any excess. Heat emboss the crystal layer until molten and then I used the Gilded Wax, which I applied very lightly over the embossed detail, just catching those tiny crystallised areas. Heat set the wax.

At this stage, I also used the same technique around the top edge of the tag ~ if you look closely, you can see a smattering of gold.

The umbrella is now ready...

PAPER DOLLS

I colour tinted the paper dolls with a water brush and Distress Crayons and then added white pen details to each of them.

Mount the image of the girls onto foam pads and then place them onto the tag, attaching them so they stand on the ruler piece. I then attached the die cut umbrella, placing it behind them, and once again adhering it to the tag using foam pads to add dimension.

Next to the girls, I used a toadstool from the Field Notes Ephemera set and mounted this to my ledge with foam pads.

EMBELLISHMENTS

On the right hand side, I used a Flash Card with the word 'smile' printed on it. I dipped my card into a puddle of Gathered Twigs Distress Ink, which I pounced onto my media mat, and sprayed with water. I then heat dried the surface before I distressed the edges of the card and inked with more of the Gathered Twigs.

I mounted the card onto the tag with foam pads and clipped a Tiny Clip onto the side.

On the opposite side, I added my quote using Clippings Stickers. I chose 'they were perfectly happy" and cut these into smaller pieces before adhering them to my tag.

To complete the ledge, I used moss and some tiny pieces of Mummy Cloth that I dyed with Frayed Burlap Distress Stain and then frayed the edges of the cloth before attaching them.

Finally, I added some ribbon through the hole in the tag. I used some of Tim's Crinkle Ribbon that I still have in my stash, but you can use Seam Binding ribbon if you don't have this. I dyed the ribbon with Speckled Egg and Antique Linen Stain, dried it with my heat tool and then threaded it through the hole, leaving the ends of the ribbon to hang down.

So that completes my tag and I hope you love what i've made and been inspired by the products and the techniques.

As always, if you make anything, or if you've been inspired by anything that you've seen here on my blog ~ then please, let me know by tagging me on social media or leaving a comment here and I will be right over to take a look!
