I Believe You're Scared...

Hello everyone and welcome to another week over on the Simon Says Stamp Monday Challenge Blog! This week, the theme for the challenge is called A WALK ON THE DARK SIDE and the team are showcasing products of someone I think everyone knows that I love...Tim Holtz! So, I don't think I could've asked for a better combination than this to work on, I was in my element creating a project for Halloween, using plenty of Tim's wonderful products!

I decided to create a burlap panel for my project, telling another story which is something I love to do within my work! This time, it's the story of a little girl, who's found herself lost and alone and a little bit scared as she sits amongst a collection of oddities! There's lots of layers and depth to this project and everything sits on a shelf of driftwood which is attached to my panel.

 

So, to begin with I did embrace the dark side of colour and began by dying my burlap panel black, using Black Soot Distress Spray Stain which I lightly spritzed over the surface. Heat dry or allow to dry naturally.

 

Whilst the panel is drying, I cut a piece of paper from the Halloween Paper Stash and stitched around the outside in black thread. Using Collage Medium, I adhered my paper to the black burlap panel.

To create the first layer on the panel, I used the largest of the Vignette Panels and painted it black. I then attached some more paper from the stash, adhering it directly onto the panel, leaving a border of the wood showing around the outside. Apply Collage Medium over the top of the panel to seal the paper layer, add some Black Soot Distress Crayon around the outside, blending out the colour with your finger and then. using the Splatter Brush, flick Black Soot Distress Paint across the surface! Heat dry the surface whilst creating the next section, the spider web.

For this, I used the Cobweb die from Sizzix and cut into black card. I then dabbed the die cut with Versamark Ink and sprinkled a combination of Liquid Platinum and Black Embossing Powders over the top. Tap away any excess powder and then heat emboss until molten. I repeated this process until you have a really thick covering on the web.

Once I was happy, I used Collage Medium to attach my web, which I cut to size so that it would fit onto my vignette panel.

For the next part, I wanted to create a shelf and for this I used a piece of driftwood so that all my embellishments could be clustered onto the shelf and I could sit my little girl on the edge.

I attached the piece of wood, which I lightly inked with Walnut Stain Distress Ink, using a hot glue gun and then adhered some cheesecloth, dyed with Pumice Stone and Antique Linen onto the shelf, just allowing it to drape naturally.

Once this is all in place, I then matted my vignette panel onto some silver metallic card, followed by purple kraft core card and a final layer of gold metallic kraft card, each time leaving a border around the outside. Attach the panels onto the centre of the burlap panel.

Now for the fun part, embellishing! I started by creating my bottles, adding a layer of Collage Medium over the outside of the bottle and then applying Rock Candy Crackle Paint when the medium was thoroughly dry. You can see this process HERE ~ it is on a larger glass jar but is exactly the same technique! When the crackles have appeared and the medium is dry, apply alcohol ink to the glass and add labels to each bottle. I also filled some of the bottles and dripped candle wax over others to create a really old, dusty look.

I added a broomstick and some Boneyard pieces into the bottle arrangement which I attached onto the shelf using hot glue.

Next, I coloured the little girl using Distress Marker Pens and attached her onto the edge of my shelf, so she appears to be sitting amongst the bottles with her legs dangling over the edge.

I also added some skulls, piled up next to her, a remnant rub spider and a flower.

To complete the panel, I used the Halloween Typography Findings, coloured with a combination of Tarnished Brass and Antiqued Bronze Distress Paint. Once the lettering is dry, I attached them to my panel using good old Collage Medium.

I also added a red resin rose to each corner...

For the finishing touch, I added my quote "I Believe You're Scared", which I took from the Halloween Clippings and attached directly to my panel.

...and that completes my burlap panel, full of curious oddities and spooky goings on and I hope you've been inspired by this piece and love what I've created ~ it was so much fun to make!
