Runway Fashion ~ Simon Says Stamp Monday Challenge

Over on the Simon Says Stamp Monday Challenge Blog we have a brand new challenge starting today and this week is ~ ANYTHING GOES! Yes, you can do anything you want, there are no rules ~ just craft!!

For those who know me well, you will know that I love fashion and I adore the work of Tom Ford, Alexander McQueen, Dior, Lulu Guinness and Karl Lagerfeld. So with this in mind, when I started working on this challenge piece at the end of March (I work well in advance, lol) and because as soon as I saw the gorgeous new Runway stamps by Tim Holtz, I just knew these stamps were my thing and I would have to use them and was inspired to create a triptych of tags using yellow as a main feature because that was the colour that was so heavily featured in the spring/summer catwalk shows.

To begin with I took three Manila tags and coated each tag with a mix of Scattered Straw and Picket Fence Distress Paint. When the paint was dry I applied Texture Paste through the Lace Layering Stencil. Mount each tag when the paste is dry onto steel grey card, leaving a narrow border around the outside.

Now to move onto the next stage and for this I cut three pieces of watercolour card, 13.5 x 7cm and using the City Scapes stamp set, I individually stamped the London, Paris and New York skylines across the bottom of each piece of card. I then went on to stamp the Runway models above each of the skylines.

Next, I watercoloured the stamped images, using a watercolour brush to pick up colour from Distress Marker Pens that I scribbled onto a craft sheet. I wanted to keep the sketchy feel to these stamps and so decided to give them a soft washed watercolour effect. Give them a quick blast with a heat tool and then using the Distress Marker Spritzer, add some background detail to each of the panels.

Machine stitch around the outside of each panel and then attach them to the tags using foam pads.

Using jet black Archival Ink, stamp the London, Paris, New York wording onto a further piece of card and cut the words into individual cities. Ink around the edges and attach each to the top section of your tag.

Dye some crinkle ribbon with Scattered Straw Distress Spray Stain and cut small strips and thread through the holes in two of the tags, securing them with a knot. For the third tag which will be in the centre, tie the ribbon into a scruffy bow and attach to the top of the tag, adding a resin rose to the centre.

As a finishing touch, add small sequins around the image in the centre for a little bit of glamour and subtle glitz!

Finally, all we need to do is piece our tags together and for this I cut small pieces of the steel grey card, approx 8 x 4cm and score and fold vertically down the centre of each to form hinges. Stick the card hinges to the back of the first tag, placing them evenly at the top and bottom and then attach the second tag to the first, leaving a slight gap between the two tags of approx 1/16".

This will ensure that the tags will close perfectly when folded together. Attach the third and final tag to complete the triptych and that completes my fashion inspired project.
